Oficcine Panerai Radiomir California - PAM00249

Part of a single owner collection.

The Radiomir California PAM00249 is a quasi-perfect replica of the first original Radiomir created by Officine Panerai at the end of the 1930’s. The Radiomir, which were the first water-resistant and luminescent watches on the market, was at the time reserved exclusively for the divers of the Italian navy.

Identical in looks with its military elder, the PAM00249 wire loop strap attachments are no longer soldered on the case, but screwed in instead, making it easier to change straps. Similarly, the original Rolex movement (based on a Cortebert movement) has been replaced by a classic but completely reworked Unitas where the bridges on the “OP X” calibre have been redesigned to resemble the original.

The California dial follows the original model with its distinctive Roman numerals from 9 to 3 o'clock, and its Arabic numerals from 3 to 9 o’clock. The origin of this design is not clear, but it was first used by Rolex on pocket watches before it was taken over again by Panerai. The dial is completely free of any inscriptions, including the brand name with follows its military predecessors that were "anonymous".

With this model, Panerai used Luminova for the first time with an off-white colour reminiscent of the colour of tritium patinated by time. The convex glass used is not made out of sapphire, but the original plexiglass. The blued hands over the dial correspond to that of the historical model and water-resistance is limited to 30 meters as was the water-resistance of the historical model.

What to look out for on this watch:

Mint condition, never worn. Nº XXXX of a limited edition of 1936. With very slight markings on leather bracelet probably due to being preserved too long in its original case. Box and papers. 2-year guarantee.

Limited edition and serial numbers removed from pictures to prevent counterfeiting. Available on request through PM.
