For sale is my YG Ulysse Nardin Astrolabium Galileo Galilei. Once the most functionally rich watch in the world (per Guinness Book of Records), it’s also really intellectually and aesthetically satisfying, and this version in my view is the best.
The complexity of the Astrolabium is well documented – as well as legal and solar time, it is a perpetual calendar and has star chart, position of sun/moon (including sunrise/sunset/moonrise/moonset), eclipse prediction, zodiac indication and more. However, despite what people say, it’s actually quite easy to read the basic functions and the more complex features are still usable.
There are lots of versions of the AGG: different sizes (the Trilogy of Time version is bigger), metals, lug design, case-back, with or without day etc. I think the day elevates the perpetual calendar and usability and this version has the normal lugs, 18K yellow-gold case, 40mm case size and the all-important sapphire case-back so you can see the beautiful movement.
I've owned the watch since 2012. I’ve had it serviced, most recently at Watches of Switzerland in May 2022 (though it went back to Switzerland for that). Since the service I’ve only worn it a handful of times.
It comes with a simple UN box and is currently on a London dial but I also have the original dial, which I think is a NYC dial (UN didn’t originally want me to keep both, but relented so should be able to swap back if you aren’t from the UK and that’s a better fit).
Condition is very good: some very light swirls considering it’s an 80s/90s watch visible on the back but it’s clean on the wrist and the lacquer on the bezel is also in good condition. The dial is very reflective, which is fine in use (and looks great without being too bling) but makes it hard to photograph – the photo of the dial here therefore looks flat because it’s deliberately positioned to show the details, but it doesn’t look like that in the metal.
I’m selling as my eyesight means I can no longer read it or appreciate it properly. Price is firm at this stage. No trades, please. Watch and I are in UK.
