Mahogany astronomer’s chair which belonged to Dr. George Daniels CBE.

The chair was purchased at the estate sale of Dr. Daniels’ belongings and is accompanied by the invoice from the sale.
It had been rumoured at the time that the chair was made by George Daniels himself but after extensive research I believe that it is an antique piece dating between 1872 - 1910.
The most likely maker is William Callaghan, an optician and manufacturer of telescopes on New Bond Street, London. Several models were produced with differing heights to suit different models of telescopes.
A similar example is in the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum in London and there is much information on their website relating to the chairs.

I have found five similar examples which have been sold through the English auction houses over the last eighteen years, with prices ranging from £460 - £5000, without the Daniels’ provenance of course.
The chair is in good condition with evidence of previous repairs to the front corner and the hand hole. The chair is located in England.

Open to realistic offers.
