My only Lange - a Fliegeruhr
Hi all,
I only have the one Lange (not officially mine but I am in charge of it!). Its an interesting one (to be fair - all Langes are, but this one is curious from a historical perspective).
It's a WW2 era Fliegeruhr, FL23883, Observer's watch, model number FL23883. You will see the heritage of the IWC Big Pilot . It is HUGE, 55mm - coming with an oversized strap designed to be worn over the arm of a flying jacket.
The funny story about this watch is that my Dad was a collector of pocket watches and unusual wristwatches, some very nice ones. This was in the collection. My Dad is now in a rest home due to age and illness, and my sister and I were cataloguing his watches and came across this one, which I recalled my Dad telling me was a Luftwaffe pilot's watch from WW2. I took the watch to a watch maker who promptly took the case off the back, and exposed those beautiful words for all to see - "A Lange and Sohne".
It needs a polish and maybe a service (runs just fine though, the watch maker friend said he didn't need to service the watch, it was ok) and sadly it has a rather vulgar plastic oversize strap. One day I'll source an oversized leather strap (maybe shell cordovan), get the archive papers from Lange and and repost for your interest!
