That’s a big statement!

The Lemania movements were legendary, but the in-house movement is definitely an evolution. The reason why your watchmaker may see more of them is because Patek increased production volumes and there is more of them in circulation.

The Lemania movements trade for higher for the same reason, they tend to end up with collectors so supply more constrained. Eventually the first generation in-house movements will have their own place in the history books.

The in-house PP movements are less reliable (my watchmaker has seen a lot of them in for service).

Geneva seal requires hand finishing as a final step, the PP seal is meaningless. Those would be two reasons I would strongly prefer a Lemania based Patek. Plus, the vintage and semi-vintage market is exploding and those older Pateks are often really lovel...

Interesting!

Does this apply also to the 5270 PP movements as well?

That’s a big statement!

PP production went up to 55,000+ from maybe 5,000. QC took a serious hit, as a consequence--which is another variable.

I think it's that the older models are more beautifully designed...

...I can't quantify it, but they just look better to me...

I personally agree.

Although I do have to say the 5270 is a very nice watch! 5070 is a dream watch. It's perfect.

The current movement is far, far superior than the Lemania

This chrono line was the first Patek chrono in 60 years or so, hence everybody jumped on it. Regarding current prices for it: speculations, same like stock market.

Well said.👍🏻🥂

I find the design of the 5170 to be better done than the 5070. You can tell from the subdial positions and thicker bezel that they had to compromise on these to fit that smaller movement into the larger 42mm case. You don't get that at all with the 5170 w...

Same with me.

When I look at the 5070 I see a (too) small movement in a (too) big case!

Absolutely agree

And I do prefer largely the 5170 ref

It's very subjective...

The older movements were made by Lemania, a SWATCH group company. Lemania chronographs are amongst some of the renowned chronographs utilized by Vacheron Constantin, Patek Philippe, and Breguet. These movements are generally very well finished, and have a...

Most welcome MTR.

Patek Philippe has also tried to show off some savoire faire with their new movements. For instance, the fully polished column wheel cap is something that isn't necessary (the Lemania doesn't have it) and quite special. Also, as SWATCH Group was limiting ...

of a catalyst. 😉 And I think not all the in-house movements were better / more reliable then the “standard” ETA movement. Often “in-house” is equated with higher quality, which in turn justifies higher costs. However, this does not always have to actually...

Correct!

Generic ETA movements are very reliable, highly refined since so many were made, lots of R&D put into them over the years, easy to service since most watchmakers know how to service them, have readily available parts, etc. In-house is not always better, a...

Maybe fewer 5070 and 5970

 By: gqmagic : February 28th, 2022-23:43
Maybe fewer (guessing) of the 5070 and 5970 made which if so tends to make them more desirable in addition to the finishing, maybe more so.

I think an in house movement is always the to ho and I am really surprised about the reliability comment ..

The lemania had a 2.5 frequency and the 29-535 a much better and more modern 4Hz. It also had 6 patents recognizing various upgrades including Elimination of shaky seconds and improved power efficiency as mentioned in an article by Deployant. The chrono a...

As for the important question, "Why is the Lemania model expensive?", It may be best to have a small number of production.

Another reason is that the case and dial design of a long time ago also have a unique taste that is not required for current products. I personally like their hands

It’s all about the case.

 By: montecristo#2 : March 4th, 2022-22:28
In my opinion, the stepped case is what’s driving the premium price.

It’s probably all about the sub counters being offset below the centre line

Maybe they got influenced by Daytona and Lange🤦🏽‍♂️🤷🏾

I never understood the fascination with the 5070…

That 5970 makes my knees weak however! I love both the old and new movements for different reasons, I’m not sure I have a favorite. But the dial of the 5970 is perfection.
