Patek’s nicest modern Calatrava?

 By: vitalsigns : May 3rd, 2023-02:53
The 5127 exudes sensuality. Not a sharp edge to be found on the curvaceous case. Perhaps the original Galet if you understand the reference. A generation when the name "Patek Philippe" was very subtly printed on the dial. Perhaps only the wearer could rea...

Nice, could very well be their nicest Calatrava

Definitely a nice one you have.

Thanks John for a heartfelt and beautifully-written (and, may I say, a little nostalgic? ;-)) review of the 5127G!

While I very much welcome the new generation of models that is slowly finding its way into the Calatrava collection, I am sure that a more classical offering will never cease to play a critical role within Patek's lineup ;-) I'm happy to see the love mode...

🙏🥂Cheers.

I was captivated the moment I saw this ad, and did everything in my power to get this (but bracelet model). ...

One of my fav... ...

The 5153 in its various dials is more vintage classic in a modern offering.

I love the hunter caseback on the 5153.

Agree

Here's the caseback... ...

I'm an outlier here, but if I could have the 5127 without a date, it would be an easy decision to prefer the 5127 over the 5196P.

I don't think the 5196s are particularly great on the wrist...an overall flat piece without many contours. One definitely buys the 5196P for its dial. That said, it is a lovely piece, but priced very dearly nowadays.

The 5127 is my favorite watch

The size, shape, dial, curves, simplicity — everything.

Cheers, John. It is definitely one of my favorite time only or time/date only pieces.

It exudes quality and craft yet still is below the radar on the wrist. A perceptive eye would see this but the watch never shouts.

Well said vitalsigns. Only 37mm, but such elegant, understated wrist presence.

I've always thought it was beyond me financially. So, in the meantime, I've spent twice as much on a bundle of watches that aren't quite as nice.

A problem we all have: buying too many insufficiently desired pieces.

Someone once said: the best watch purchases are the ones that hurt a bit (financially). It's not a universal rule, but the point is strong. True desire, and perhaps long term enjoyment, is often manifested by ones willingness to endure a bit of pain.

Yes, and sometimes it's best not to wait too long.

It's probably getting harder to find really nice examples of the 5127. They're still out there ... I hope ;-)

They are out there, but getting rarer...in the 22-25K range. I just saw a nice example if interested. I can PM you the dealer's name.

No affiliation with me, of course. I'm just a casual enthusiast/collector.

Yes, vitalsigns, a little temptation might be good ;-)

It seems that range has been pretty stable for a few years.

I share your appreciation

My beloved 5110 has a very similar case but I think the lugs are slightly different, a bit more elongated on the 5110, and a bit more harmonious on the 5127.

so similar . I love both

...

Perfect!

 By: blau : May 3rd, 2023-15:36
Looking at them next to each other it seems clear that the 5110 bezel is a little wider (and taller?) than the 5127 bezel. Am I right about the difference between the lugs, or are they actually just the same?
