Habring2 vs US Airport Security - Habring2 loses

Jun 09, 2013,09:09 AM

Don - I didn't want to hijack TopCats thread, so I am re-posting the information in a new thread with what happened. Feel free to add-on and let me know if you have had any slow motion moments with your watches.

Maria and Richard made a tourbillon for me in 2004 with their first series. It was their first 3D watch and I went over to their atelier to pick it up. I remember asking about developing a jump second tourbillon cage  and getting that great look from Richard like would you like me to bend the laws of physics while I am at it. It's one of my favorite watches because of the relationship it created with the Habrings.

Fast forward to a few months ago. I had a short business trip and decided to leave my travel watches at home and wear my tourbillon. I am going through the DFW airport security. I forgot to take off my watch when I got to the metal detector and was sent back to the x-ray machine holding my pants up and shuffling in socks. Security was setting down the small container on the belt as I put the watch in it. The watch slipped out of my hand as I went over the plastic lip and that is when the world went into slow motion. I saw the tourbillon start to fall out of the container, off the conveyer belt and onto the cement floor. I had a split second choice to drop my pants or get the watch. I made the wrong choice. I could see it twisting to its side as it fell. As the world sped back up I picked it up and this is what I saw:

As soon as I saw the damage I put the watch away until I got back home. The extra crystals I have are for the standard Habring2 watches. The tourbillion has a raised crystal, so initially I was going to ask Richard or Maria to send me one so I could replace it. As I looked at the watch under a loop I could see the center pinion was not straight. That was the bad news. I decided not to take it apart and find out the root caouse of the problem and sent it back to the Habrings.

According to Richard I have the distinction of being the first person to break one of his crystals.

I once dropped an astrolabium but thankfully no damage. The basic tune-up for that watch was the cost a Habring2 watch.

Though I have come close, I have always been fortunate, for it land on a soft landing. There cannot be many "accidents" that top this type and make most of us cringe :( In hindsight, did you make the right choice ;) Has Richard advised how long it will ta...

Watch selection is a personal matter. I have gotten to the point in life where I like comfort, dependability and value. Since its inception, the Habring2's have been the best value on the market. They are also very utilitarian in design and execution. You...

I have *never* been required to take a watch off during security check at the airport. Keep it on your wrist and they can use the wand if they need to check it. TSA cannot make you remove it, and they aren't insured for damage that might occur if it is da...
