One of the prettiest pieces I know...
By: Gary G : August 16th, 2012-09:21
Took a few minutes last night to fire off some shots -- all single exposures (that is, no stacking)... The D800e can't be beaten for sharpness, but I am still working on some interesting chromatic aberration issues with the Antiqua specifically. May be th...
Can u not correct the CA with PP ?
By: flamenco : August 16th, 2012-09:39
Not sure if its me or is the white balance a tad off. Do you normally perform bracketing for your macro shots ? Great hots nonetheless. Yes, the D800E is touchable for sharpest !
Thanks very much for the thoughts
By: Gary G : August 16th, 2012-12:11
One issue that I have is that my photo monitor (a calibrated Samsung LCD) nonetheless seems to give a somewhat "warmer" (not to mention brighter) rendering of images than shows up online (especially when viewed on my laptop). I did a fair amount of post-p...
As you know ...
By: Mark in Paris : August 17th, 2012-01:10
I also try to improve myself in taking pictures and thus have been reading much about it lately. Concerning calibration issues, I'm sure you're already aware of the need to calibrate the screen you work on and, for someone who really wants to do everythin...
Thank you for this useful additional information!
By: Gary G : August 20th, 2012-16:25
I was looking again at these photos on my home monitor vs. iPad vs. laptop, and each looks a bit (to a lot) different! I will certainly try to apply the lessons to which you referred me. I do find that this is not an everyday watch, but I do wear it more ...
If you need help Gary,
By: Mark in Paris : August 21st, 2012-07:52
I'm just new in the photo world but I've been reading around magazines and books to learn much as I can on the subject and I found an article about this color calibration mater. As there are many displays around a picture (scanner, camera, screen, browser...
Thanks a lot Gary for these super shots!
By: foversta : August 16th, 2012-09:49
This watch has the little something others don't have. When you see it, you may think it is well... very strange. Then you put it on your wrist and it has something magic! Thanks for the gorgeous pics! Fx
Thanks, FX
By: Gary G : August 16th, 2012-12:12
This piece does look super on the wrist -- when my friends put it on at watch lunches, it is hard to get them to take it off! Glad you liked the photos... Best, Gary
Great shots Gary!
By: andrewluff : August 16th, 2012-09:54
Really clear and sharp... congrats! The finish is amazing. I love this watch, I just wish it was a little bigger as I would have one in my collection at the blink of an eye. Cheers Andrew
It's funny
By: Gary G : August 16th, 2012-12:13
...for years people conceived of this piece as being "too big" -- when in reality it is quite nicely sized, almost delicate. Guess you need a Janvier :-) Thanks for the kind words! Best, Gary
Wears great, Magnus!
By: Gary G : August 16th, 2012-12:14
Have you tried one? I find it a delight to wear -- and I have no hesitation wearing it for business as well as on my personal time. Thanks for writing! Best, Gary
+1
By: flamenco : August 16th, 2012-20:21
Have to second Gary on that, I have had the fortune to try the Classic, Trio and Antiqua. Am sure it was done consciously, they all feel great and right on the wrist !
There is something about Vianney's cases!
By: Gary G : August 20th, 2012-16:14
Funny as one might think that the "difficult" finishing work is inside the case, but Vianney's cases are visibly "better" than others. Appreciate your kind words. Best, Gary
But who is the famous brand ambassador?
By: Whirling : August 16th, 2012-16:11
It is an absolutely stunning piece and so distinctive. However, until Mr. Halter hires a famous actor or sports star to say he likes the watch, I just don't know if I can trust my own feelings about it. By the way, does anybody know if brand ambassadors g...
Guess I will have to fight you for it, Jon!
By: Gary G : August 20th, 2012-16:16
I am of course a legend in my own mind, as we say here in the US -- and of course there are long-time PuristS who have been big champions of Vianney's work (including Bernard and Amery, to be sure). Don't think any of us are big sports stars, though :-) B...
Funny you should say that!
By: Gary G : August 20th, 2012-16:18
I am quite flattered to report that Vianney has asked me whether he might use some of these images on his website -- a first for me! Big smiles on this end, for sure. As for Vianney's next piece, he has been hinting that one is on the way, but no details ...
If I were Vianney
By: RJW : August 20th, 2012-18:51
I'd commission you to photograph the next piece too. Great photos Gary. Regards, Richard.
Thank you!
By: Gary G : September 12th, 2012-13:04
Sorry to be a bit slow to respond, Richard -- business has been a bit overwhelming of late, and I tend not to go back to the "older" threads too much. I do greatly appreciate the kind words, however! It would be a fantastic treat to photograph the next wa...
Fantastic pictures Gary!
By: Tim Jackson : August 17th, 2012-14:57
I'll second Don's comment about Vianney's habillage being second to none. The lengths they go to in his atelier to attain these extra-ordinary finishes by hand on the case, bezels and crown is something I still find truly amazing. Having visited Vianney i...
Fun to share, Tim!
By: Gary G : August 20th, 2012-16:20
You better than most know the labor of love associated with Vianney's pieces -- and it really shows up in images! All the best, Gary
Great pics, Gary!!
By: KIH : August 18th, 2012-03:29
I knew your photos have been exceptional, but this time, outstanding! Whether I agree with you about the assessment of the subject is a different matter, though... :-) Ken in Boston :-)
Greetings and thanks, Ken!
By: Gary G : August 20th, 2012-16:21
I understand that this watch is not for everyone, and I would never, ever dispute your excellent taste! Best, Gary
Very beautiful piece!
By: BluNotte : August 18th, 2012-17:46
Hey Gary, Keep on enjoying it! Tschuss Stephen
Thank you, Stephen!
By: Gary G : August 20th, 2012-16:23
I'm now a bit paranoid about wearing it, as it took me quite a while to get the dust off for the photos and I would like to take some more shots! I am sure that I will have it on my wrist again soon, however :-) Best, Gary
greetings and compliments from Germany.

First and fourth pix
By: Ancienne Le Brassus : August 20th, 2012-12:10
are terrific. The first because of the beautiful lighting throughout the whole watch, is extremely balanced. Then the angle gives it just that bit of dynamism that provides a path for the eye to wander through the different portholes of the Antiqua... ver...

By: Gary G : August 20th, 2012-16:27
Thank you very much for your kind comments -- made more interesting to me by the fact that your comments on the first photo almost exactly matched those from my instructor, who thought that picture was "by far" the best of all those I have sent to him. Yo...

Need time to recover. A fabulous watch, I love all the details that shows the work of the hand in your photos! Francois
Beautiful pictures of the most emotional piece I own.
By: bernard cheong : August 29th, 2012-18:01
Wonderful! Imagine, in 1998...I could not convince a doctor friend to buy one for $70,000 USD (then) brand new, in platinum. I told him, it would make him a good 10% returns if he did not want it in 10 years.
Not such a good return then Bernard...
By: andrewluff : August 29th, 2012-22:49
10% per year or over the 10 years? I think leaving the money in the bank would have got him at least 1% per year? A platinum one sold at auction in 2009 and only sold for $86,500 (including the buyers commission), so after the seller would have received l...
Well a good buy...
By: andrewluff : August 30th, 2012-05:59
If the guy who bought it sold it for a 300-400% mark up. As you say it depends who is in the auction house/online etc at the time, there are always bargains to be had in auctions and also people getting carried away! The thing with most of these independe...
