The Chopard Mille Miglia Classic XL 90th Anniversary

A recent meeting in town during weekday working hours allowed me to pass by the Chopard Boutique on my way back to the office to see if they had any novelties. And my curiosity was rewarded - while the Baselworld collection was not there yet, they did have a Mille Miglia Classic XL 90th Anniversary watch in store.

Having been previously reviewed in detail by Forvesta (here: www.watchprosite.com for details) and MTF (here: www.watchprosite.com for details), I can only add a handful of personal observations.

I expected the watch to be and to wear large, given the dimensions being close to the 2016 Mille Miglia Race Edition and the case made of rose gold. Consequently I was positively surprised in that the size looked manageable on the wrist and the heft - while obvious - did not bother me at all (you may remember that I generally prefer lighter watches). The lug design definitely plays a role and I suppose the warmer tone of the RG case also makes the watch less 'dramatic' on the wrist than the 2016 in steel.

The movement - a direct descendant of the no date hand wound chrono caliber fitted to the Puristspro Edition of the 1963 Chronograph - is a sight to behold. And it makes this an exceedingly rare Mille Miglia without a date.

In addition to this one of the main features of the watch for me is its stealthiness. If you're not very much in the know you may simply mistake it for a garden variety MM - not bad but definitely not nearly as exciting as what we have here. I know this non-signalling may go against the Veblenist grain (or is maybe the next development stage) but it definitely appeals to me greatly.

So overall a truly positive surprise, with the wonderful movement, the buttery smooth controls, well managed wearability in spite of very prominent case dimensions and an under the radar appearance. Very well done IMHO 👍🏻

Thanks for viewing!

As bizzare as this sounds, yes :)

I would also have preferred a slightly smaller case but the case & lug design and movement size make it work.
