My First Independent: Speake-Marin Velsheda

Jul 24, 2017,12:48 PM

Hello all, first time posting here, but a long-time lurker. I have appreciated the vast amount of knowledge, candidness, and genuine appreciation for horology you all have! With that said, I've just recently added my first independent piece to the collection.

The Velsheda - The Philosopher's Watch

I was taken aback when I first stumbled upon this model. It screamed out at me. The single hand and the constantly spinning 'sub seconds' wheel are mesmerizing. It's one thing to see pictures, it's another to see it in action. The juxtaposition of the single hour hand and seconds dial make for a feast for the eyes. I find myself watching it spin during my duller meetings. To that point, I've found that the Velsheda is a piece that demands that the user be in control of their own time. It's not a piece for precision. If you have your life down the the minute, this isn't the watch for you. But, if you like to feel in control of your time and contemplate the world - this is the watch for you!

I was worried, to be honest, about the size of the piccadilly case and lugs. The case is 42mm and the lugs measure to 53mm (lug to lug) but it wears beautifully. Very comfortable. The titanium case has a lot to do with that. It's incredibly light and feels very nice on the wrist. Again, I was worried about the crown as well. Similar to a Panerai Radiomir crown, I thought it might dig into my wrist. I can happily say that is not an issue. This thing is so light and comfortable! I'm also absolutely smitten by the blued hands. They are magnificent. I love playing with them in the sunlight.

I'm sad to hear that Peter has left the company that bears his name but I do look forward to his new endeavours with the Naked Watchmaker program.

Cheers!

-Nick

It makes my eyes light up when the flecto is just so on the crystal with the hands lit up like bolts of blue lightning.

Welcome among us!

I do love this piece having seen it in the flesh. Super classy and elegant. I just prefer having 2 hands or above to tell time. This is my serpent saying hi! ...

I love that piece!

I am a fan of the new design with the date chapter ring and serpent hand moving inside the minute markers. Makes for a more pleasant user experience.

Me too!

One more PSM to add to your collection? :x

It's hard to say whether it will turn out for better or worse...

But I suspect they might go in the direction of Franck Muller with more focus on the commercial aspects in order to grow the brand and target a larger audience

congrats and welcome....
