Jaeger Lecoultre 2016 SIHH: Master Ultra Thin Perpetual 39... Black.

Jun 07, 2016,00:00 AM

A new member in the family.

After the rose gold, white gold and steel, unveiled in 2013, and after having seen some black dialed beauties, last year, such as the Master Control and the Master Ultra Thin Moon, Jaeger Lecoultre had the good idea to give to the MUT Perpetual 39 a superb black dial.

The 2013 Trio:

A winner, in my book. Why?

First because the MUT 39 mm case is gorgeous. I really hope that someday, the bigger MUT cases will replace the Master Control cases.

39 mm big, 9, 2 mm high, the proportions are beautiful.

Then, the black dial adds strength, no, better said, an incredible power of attraction to this model, in my opinion, without loosing anything from its original elegance.

The demonstration of the fact that a different dial can totally, deeply change your perception of a watch.

The new king of cool?

Enjoy these live pictures:

Surprise: a new rotor, for this latest iteration!

To compare with the 2013 edition:

I cannot end without posting a picture of the first black dialed version of the Master Perpetual Calendar issued in the early 2000's which was a gorgeous watch, with its 37 mm steel case:

Interesting to see that the moon phase was originally located above the 6 o' clock hour marker, and that it moved below 12 o' clock with the Master Ultra Thin versions.

A good surprise from the 2016 collection.

What are your thoughts?

Do you share my enthusiasm for this one?

Best,

Nicolas

should be an industry standard by now and that would in turn incentivize manufacturers to up their finishings....

Agreed. [nt]

 By: amanico : June 7th, 2016-14:06

May be some explanations about the departure point of this trend...

 By: Alkiro1 : June 8th, 2016-00:13
It is always hard to say who began to offer display backs on watches. But, I had the chance to meet and talk to Jean Pierre Hagmann (very well known watch and case maker in Geneva who now works for Vacheron) some months ago and he told me that he said to ...

In the case of watches in this category

 By: skyeriding : June 15th, 2016-00:29
I feel its almost a must to have a display back. Even despite being an automatic, its a testament to show off the fine finishing that comes with watches within this segment. Even "simple" machine anglage with cotes de Geneve and pearlage is still a feast ...

Agreed. That's the difference between the general " clientèle " and the niche.

 By: amanico : June 15th, 2016-01:15
To please both, why not a hinged case back? Best, Nicolas

Exactly ;-) [nt]

You are right [nt]

 By: Alkiro1 : June 15th, 2016-06:22

Sadly, yes. [nt]

+1 [nt]

I do like

 By: Esharp : June 7th, 2016-01:34
It would be nice if the dial was available in French, like the original - for me it would add a touch of romance (well, at least a Romance language, hehe) to the watch. Aside from that there is much to admire here, a great case, useful complication, nice ...

Yes, if I remember well, way under 20 K USD, in steel.

 By: amanico : June 7th, 2016-02:15
I agree, the movement is honest, not exceptional, which is logical for that price range. Thanks for your feedback, my friend. Best, Nicolas

Yes, Sir. [nt]

 By: amanico : June 7th, 2016-03:26

Very nice for sure

 By: rnaden : June 7th, 2016-04:44
the black dial makes a statement of class and the new rotor is a nice touch. Personally would like one, but like my MUT Moon 39, I can't read the subdials well, and to me if there is a function or complication I can't use then I probably will pass. Still,...

Nice watch

And a lot of bang for the buck! Real classy

True! [nt]

Enjoy

The wrist shot I took a few weeks ago. ...

I love the new case...

 By: watchme : June 7th, 2016-06:41
however, in the old version, in which JLC turned the complication plate 180 degrees, I liked better, especially with the last 2 digits of the year embedded within the top subdial. I feel it gave it better overall balance and made it look less like the Kur...

That is the only detail I don't like, on the current an on the former Master PC.

 By: amanico : June 7th, 2016-06:51
I would have preferred without the years window. It would be, in my opinion, much purer, without. Thanks for your feedback, Dean. Best, Nicolas

The year window is Mandatory on this calibre

 By: patrickh : June 7th, 2016-13:02
as all is programmed to change all together with the ALONE pusher. I sold mine in WG, as if you do not use the watch for a long time (turn-over period) you have to push any missing date with the pusher. Or to put the watch on the winder. In fact, the year...

+1, agreed.

 By: patrickh : June 7th, 2016-13:13
To note, the old calibre was very accurate from second to year. Congratulations to JLC watchmakers. Patrickh

Very nice model, especially with the black dial...

 By: eklektik : June 8th, 2016-04:59
But which one to put on my wish list? This one or the black MUT moon? Best, E

This one, in my opinion, if you are not afraid of the extra cost.

 By: amanico : June 8th, 2016-11:37
An extra cost which is fully justified, I think. Best, Etienne. Nicolas

For me, there is something nerve racking...

 By: Kamy : June 9th, 2016-01:02
... about a self winding perpetual calendar watch without a power reserve indicator. If I had my wish, it would be a manual wind. Nevertheless, it certainly is a striking watch. Thanks for the pictorial Nicolas! Any chance you have a wrist shot? Cheers my...

Really like this one.. Proportions, dial layout, Position of moon @ 12, all in the new case! :))

 By: hs111 : June 9th, 2016-01:40
Actually, it\'s one of The JLC offerings, I am considering - just wanted to wait, if JLC announced or pops out something new this Summer & early fall ! (?) Thx for this nice share ! Best, hs

My guess is that we'll see one or two new things before the end of this year, indeed. Still...

This MUT 39 PC Black is such a cool offer! Best, Nicolas

Amazing black dial...

 By: mahesh : June 9th, 2016-20:57
the moon phase placement below 12 looks better IMHO. I like the \'dot\' minute marker, it brings in a vintage charm ?! Do we need the \'year\' window at all, it would look more balanced ? - I would prefer not to have it, but it is a personal choice. Wonde...

Stunning watch...

Would love to see this in SS or RG with a subtle sunray midnight blue dial. I am a sucker for blue dials!

Saw this one at the Boutique ...

 By: nilomis : June 17th, 2016-07:59
Tempting, yes but I was able to resist. After all, my wife owns the white dialed and she may start a duo. Oh no! Cheers, Nilo

This is on my list but.....

By: Velociphile - No longer in the building : June 20th, 2016-11:46
..not available in French as far as I can tell from asking the London Boutique. Is that absolutely the case JLC? Shame if so. And I would still prefer it if the back tips of the hands were like the earlier version - but not a deal breaker. They are notice...

Correct me if I am wrong, but in not such a distant past...

 By: amanico : June 20th, 2016-11:54
These Perpetual Calendars were available in English, German, Italian, Spanish, and French. Like you, that is something I would really like to see. Best, Nicolas

I love this for the new rotor :)

 By: jrwong23 (aka watchthebin) : June 20th, 2016-17:57
the black dial is very cool too of course and I like it too. I used to think I should have waited for this black dial version instead of getting my silver sunburst dial boutique special edition but after looking at this in the metal, I think my silver dia...

Thanks for confirming!

that's a class act from JLC

How "robust" is the movement?

 By: schopfer : June 23rd, 2016-18:32
How "robust" is the movement? This has been on my short-short list since it was released, but can anyone comment on the fragility of the 868 movement? I\'m curious how it compares to other ultra thin movements...although I know JLC is known for some of th...

I didn't read any specific issue about this movement, Mark.

 By: amanico : June 23rd, 2016-21:55
Now, if you let it fall from a table, as most of the movements, it may be problematic. But in other cases, and specifically for a daily wear, no problems. Best, Nicolas

Thanks Nico.

 By: schopfer : June 24th, 2016-05:53
Certainly wouldn\'t let this one fall off the table!

Does anyone know if....

By: Velociphile - No longer in the building : June 24th, 2016-11:30
... there is a bracelet for this available? Thanks Velo

Looks great

And detailed review. This may be a next potential

It's lovely

I am a big fan - thanks for your review. I think I prefer it to the white face and the power reserve too. A PC is a bit of a grail for me...lucky you. Enjoy!
