Allow me to disagree ...
Watches needs to be on a size that's comfortable for the owner and ...
What is the most iconic dive watch? Rolex Sub (disclaimer: I don't own one), 40mm.
What is the most iconic pilot watch? Omega Speedmaster (it was good to fly to the Moon), 42mm.
I don't have anything against big watches, if the owner has a wrist that's proportional to the big watch otherwise it looks weird to see a massive watch on a skinny wrist.
I have a small complain, not much, about watches with movements around 26/30mm with a very large spacer to center it on the oversized case.
I like the approach used by Omega with the PO (42 and 45mm). Thy cover all bases or wrists, even of one can see that the 45mm is a tad out of proportions because the movement is small.
Zenith also has this approach (applause!!!) on some lines of El Primero (38 and 42 mm).
Cheers,
