The lateral clutch engages gears of different shapes.

The clutch wheel has ellipsoidal teeth because they are constantly engaged with the wheel on the back of the fourth wheel shaft. But the center seconds wheel has very small sawtooth teeth (two teeth for every one on the clutch wheel) to minimize jumping on engagement, though the removal of the brake must be critically timed to minimize jumping for other reasons.

Because the teeth are not matched ellipsoidal shapes, there is a bit more tooth friction, and also a bit more play (the teeth are set to engage only one-third depth).

Bit in the grand scheme of things, any additional wear must be nearly negligible.

The extra load will reduce the amplitude and power reserve somewhat, though.

El Primero question

So this is El Primero 400 - 328 parts -31 jewels -this is the all Titanium one built for the Spindrift Racing Lightweight. I know that it has a lateral clutch. I have heard that only on movements with a vertical clutch; can you run the chronograph constan...

Chronographs built with a lateral clutch can hardly avoid the jarring start of the second.

Even chronographs with a vertical clutch system, there is a some backlash in the gear system. That is to prevent the gear train from locking up. MB&F makes use of LiGa technology. I have doubt there will not be any wear and tear. About LIGA An extract rea...

About this with my friend Romain, a watchmaker at Zenith, he told me that there is no great problem in doing this. Just wind the watch about 30 times to charge enough and then,.. wear it. Grtz,Dom
