Wrist Scan for February 1st is Open Now! “NEVER SAY NEVER AGAIN!”

Jan 31, 2019,07:14 AM

Hello Friends!

Theme may seem complicated at first glance but as we think back in our experiences with hunting watches I´m sure we will find occasions in which we said “Never” regarding owning certain timepieces.

Watch C ollecting is a long and meandering journey and it takes a whole lifetime to cover. And during all this time we learn new things and facts, discover new brands and models and of course... we change our minds.

Present status of our collections is the answer to our own personal changes. In many cases what we once felt we didn´t like and would never own, the pass of time can turn it in a "I badly need it" class!

It happened to me several times. It seems I still don´t learn to keep my mouth shut! Lol!

My pictures bellow will illustrate what I mean!

Come on friends! Let´s show those watches you said you would never buy and now are your joy and pride!

And if you think you have never pronounced the word “Never” show us a timepiece which is unique and completely different from all other watches in your collection.

I wish you will have a wonderful and enjoyable week end my friends!

All the best, Abel.

I said I would never buy a watch with a dial in such a distressed condition… Till I was offered this Sub ref 5512 from 1960.

I said I would never spend that kind of money in an “old manual winding Daytona” till around eight years ago I was offered this 1967 ref 6239 with a nice story from the original owner.

I thought “Ouch! Never would buy this cartoon watch” and said “no this is not for me, thank you!” when I was offered a Snoopy Speedy for first time. A couple of months later I was desperately hunting for this one.

First of all great theme. And perfect innuendo to this weekend theme....you said all perfectly. Yes it is very dangerous to say never in watch collecting hobby. For me there are two different types of never but I agree that for both there is rule...never ...

Thanks Nicolas

 By: JohnFM : January 31st, 2019-23:24
It’s a comfortable watch and not as chunky as the bigger lugged 1940 and 1950 cases. But the dial looks HUGE, I have to admit. I love it but there are times I say, ‘Nah, put something on that’s smaller and not quite so bold.’

That’s great to hear, thanks!

 By: JohnFM : January 31st, 2019-23:26
With a 6.8” wrist, I admit to having doubts with this beast. But it’s too beautiful to leave in the cage 😉

Such a cool beast! :) [nt]

By: blomman Mr Blue : January 31st, 2019-23:38

Hello my friend John!! We watch lovers should be open minded... by the contrary it means to close many possibilities of enjoyment. In my case...

 By: Subexplorer : February 1st, 2019-04:50
... I also thought that I couldn´t bear to wear a watch larger than 40 mm... till I discovered and fell in love with Panerai watches. At present I mantain my watches in the 38 to 42 mm range. But I have an special niche in my collection devoted to Panerai...

Great theme. Two things come to mind immediately.

 By: zabreg1 Mr White : January 31st, 2019-23:47
First, I always said I would NEVER get a yellow gold watch. I was a 'cold' metals guy... Until I fell in love with the Lange PLM and that milky white dial. Then, I hunted one for a better part of the year. My other big thing was 'I will never buy a Rolex ...

Thanks. Yes, you are also to blame for the LGF.

 By: zabreg1 Mr White : February 1st, 2019-05:02
And PLM... well, I am not too fond of the black dial, I feel they watered down the whole PLM line with the omission of the email dial. That's why I had to go gold.

Enamel is always the best

 By: Arie - Mr Orange : February 1st, 2019-05:03
No doubt

Always. [nt]

 By: zabreg1 Mr White : February 1st, 2019-06:03

 By: Ares501 - Mr Green : February 1st, 2019-06:58

Thanks a lot for sharing your story my dear friend Zabreg!! It confirms that Mr Bond was right: Never say Never... again!

 By: Subexplorer : February 1st, 2019-05:14
I´m also awhite metal guy. But I have to recognize the charm of certain timepieces with a gold case and even with a gold bracelet. Now, regarding Rolex... you know how much I love the brand! I´m glad you decided to explore both!! Keep enjoying them so muc...

Yes, I have come around a bit on yellow gold as well.

 By: zabreg1 Mr White : February 1st, 2019-06:03
And Rolex... well, I have bought a few for the wife, but never even considered one for myself. Until Joe decided to make a mess in my head.

At least as the LGF is concerned, I could have told the exact same story...

 By: crown comfort : February 1st, 2019-06:15
now we need to get you deep into vintage as our next challenge

Oh, wizard, please no.

 By: zabreg1 Mr White : February 1st, 2019-07:50

Over priced tool watch. It’s for people who don’t know better. A lazy choice. Many more superior brands out there. Too many people flaunting Rolexes in Singapore (retirees with their DJs and young professionals with their Subs). Just going with the herd. ...

:))))) [nt]

This is turning into a 'Rolex? Never!' thread, haha.

I used to be a OWG. My only watch for 15+ years was an Omega Seamaster Professional 300m. When I first got to know Blomman (15-20 years ago?) I said to him, that although I appreciate what he is doing, I would never be a watch collector. My friend, do you...

We became friends on grounds other than watches. You think I have cause to ditch him?

Oh yes, I still remember, my friend! :)

By: blomman Mr Blue : February 1st, 2019-06:31
I also remember the look in your eyes while you said never.... Your eyes told another story! Enjoy the ride, my friend! Best Blomman

I swear...

"You appreciate what he is doing" Man!!!!

 By: Ares501 - Mr Green : February 1st, 2019-07:01
That's so wrong!!! He's killing us Cheers D P.S. You are book case of being blommanized )) Not rare condition

I said I appreciate what he's doing as a courtesy. You know, stuff you say to make conversation...

Luckily they are so forgiving of the nevers 😉

 By: KMII : February 2nd, 2019-22:53
And one can see that you don’t regret changing your mind 😊

There have only been two NEVER in my watch collecting career...

 By: JLCman : February 1st, 2019-07:13
...One of these had been the „I never will buy a Rolex“. But you all know that happened after the LGF thread here in our puristic community. Never say never 😉 And my second NEVER? Well, that‘s indeed a bit more ridiculous. A few months ago I planned a one...

Thanks a lot for sharing your "Never Experiences" dear JLCman!! Interesting to read so many stories with happy endings. In any case...

 By: Subexplorer : February 1st, 2019-07:43
... we should remember a watch is just an instrument no matter the brand, size or being quartz or mechanical if it serves the purpose and you feel confident and happy with it.

Another one jumps the fence for LGF.

 By: zabreg1 Mr White : February 1st, 2019-10:05
And I salute the G-Shock choice.

Never wrong with the LGF! :) [nt]

First time I went hiking with a member of Purists...

 By: claes_t : February 1st, 2019-07:20
...he wore a JLC Navy Seals Master Compressor, sneakers and a duffelbag slung over his shoulder with an unproportional amount of Louis Roederer in it... As long as the watch is up to the task, never mind the rest...

Hmmm, I wander who that might be. [nt]

Ahh Eartha Kitt! A sexy lady she was! And a voice to haunt the soul. Well... yes, the dial of my Sub is sexy and cool... almost as Eartha! Lol! It made me forget my "Never" statement indeed!

Great story behind your two MkII´s dear Art! It speaks of regrets and most important about Friendship. And I´m sure the story comes to your mind every time you wear this beautiful timepiece!! Thank you for sharing here dear friend Art! Hagwe! Abel

The Hamilton is a great piece, NT931!

 By: Subexplorer : February 2nd, 2019-05:05
These are wonderful examples of the classic GMT in several versions. May be you can move to the Submariner now? Another interesting model from the Brand. Thank you for sharing your superb collection in this great shot! Hagwe dear S F! Abel

Difficult topic for me...

 By: KMII : February 2nd, 2019-08:12
I tend to be relatively brand neutral, so the chances of a never are not particularly high with me generally. Still, I went through my pictures and found a watch that I really didn’t think I would ever get but in hindsight I wonder why I waited so long. I...

It certainly is a useful watch...

 By: KMII : February 2nd, 2019-22:22
Especially with small children around and perfect at feeding times 😉

Thank you for your post dear friend KM!! I hope...

 By: Subexplorer : February 2nd, 2019-10:40
... you are doing well now and back home!! Agree with you: these G Shocks are sturdy reliable and accurate. Bullet proof! Nice to have them on the wrist in certain conditions of use. Always practical! Hagwe my friend! Abel

Thanks Abel - not home but better 😊

 By: KMII : February 2nd, 2019-22:25
Unfortunately I have been on various business trips every day since emerging from the hospital, including this weekend. But this will hopefully change eventually. Fully agreed with you on the G-Shock. Certainly not one for the office but it definitely has...

It seems that I’m not alone here so that is very comforting.

 By: Arie - Mr Orange : February 2nd, 2019-11:34
When I started with mechanical watches I knew for sure I would never ever buy a Rolex... Yeah.....that never really worked out... ...

Wow!! Never say Never again dear Arie!! Specially if talking about Rolex! Lol!

 By: Subexplorer : February 2nd, 2019-13:09
I hope Rolex management doesn`t pay attention to statistics based on questions like: "Would you ever buy a Rolex watch?" Lol! Enjoy these wonderful timepieces my friend, and thanks a lot for your participation!! Hagwe! Abel.

Good question...

Tudor? Anniversary Speedmaster? Grönefeld? Black Explorer II? Tiger eye? Lange 1 moon phase? ... ...

Tudor 58 or Harrods

 By: Arie - Mr Orange : February 3rd, 2019-01:34
Black Explorer II Swiss only

So you only ‘need’ the Milgauss 😜

 By: Arie - Mr Orange : February 2nd, 2019-23:14
Having said that, don’t underestimate the power of the Explorer II. It is a superb summer watch. Especially in laid back places 🌴.

Not my style, the Explorer II.

 By: zabreg1 Mr White : February 3rd, 2019-00:02
The Rasta, on the other hand...

Wow that is quite a great looking Rolex collection!

 By: FabR : February 2nd, 2019-17:11
PS And I like the jackets in pictures #2 and 3! ;-)

 By: Arie - Mr Orange : February 2nd, 2019-23:12
Those jackets are still there, the watches however are not. Flipped. Regret letting that DayDate go though. Having said that; due to its weight (in any account 😉) it is not the most wearable watch in day to day life.

Now that certainly worked out for you...

 By: KMII : February 2nd, 2019-23:00
And the fantastic shots prove it, Arie 👌🏻

🤦🏻‍♂️ [nt]

 By: Arie - Mr Orange : February 2nd, 2019-23:15

Especially loved your Day Date ones...

By: blomman Mr Blue : February 3rd, 2019-00:58

Lucky you, Abel!

 By: KMII : February 2nd, 2019-22:28
The Snoopy came out some months before I seriously started getting into watches and then I was too late. But such a fun piece!

Thank you dear friend KM!! Yes, this was a fortunate change of mind after saying "Never" !! Lol! It is a fun and charming piece indeed...

 By: Subexplorer : February 3rd, 2019-04:49
... and I feel it will be a collection piece in the future as well. I really love it and makes me smile every time I have it on my wrist. Hagwe my friend! Abel

That it most certainly is!

 By: KMII : February 3rd, 2019-06:03
By the time I got interested they were already at twice MRSP, now more like at 3 times - probably the modern Omega with the fastest appreciation. And as you say, such a fun watch, too 👌🏻

 By: Mike H : February 3rd, 2019-08:54
