Among the watches with long and storied histories of adventure and daring above and beneath the waves, the Seiko divers, especially the 6105 through SLA033 Turtles have been there and done that.
“A List” actors have worn them on film (although rarely on the red carpet). Apocalypse Now’s Captain Benjamin Willard played by Martin Sheen is probably the most well known with his 6105:
Also, Kiefer Sutherland:
And Ed Harris taking the Turtle beneath the waves in The Abyss:
Of course, what mention of tough turtles could go without these guys?
Leaving the fictional life behind, the true example of a tough watch comes when a polar explorer and mountaineer chooses it without regard for sponsorship to be his companion.
Naomi Uemura bought his 6105 because, in his mind it was simply the best tool for the job. First North Pole solo, First solo ascent of Denali, solo sled-dog trip from Greenland to Alaska. Sadly, Uemura died after summiting Denali in the winter of 1984 at age 43. Tough indeed.
Turtles all the way down.
