This reminds me of an awesome story early in my career

I'm working for a tech start-up around 1999 and we are trying to land Merrill Lynch as a light-house customer. Our VP of Business Development, Mark, is very well connected at ML and gets us personal meetings with the CEO and the COO at their New York HQ. We meet with the COO, Lonny, first and next we meet with the CEO, David Komansky, way up on the top floor in his massively impressive personal board room. Komansky is this typical no bull-shit New Yorker. In the meeting is our CEO, Mike, Mark and myself. Komansky asks "what did Lonny think of you guys?" and Mark blurts out "Lonny said write Mike a check for millions of dollars!!". And without hesitation and totally deadpan Komansky immediately replies "I don't write the checks, I just sign them". Mic drop.
