The screws hold the dial in place

 

Apparently the first ones had standard dial brackets, but the movement of the lunette in setting the alarm (I spoke inexactly when I said the alarm was set by the bezel) sometimes caused the dial to slip.   This according to Horlbeck's treatise, the Alarm Wristwatch.
