Hmmhh.. Let me see, what to chip in to play..

Apr 16, 2022,14:34 PM

1/ Earth is one of my Rollies, a GMT Master, which I had been chasing quite some time,

in fact for about half a year to persuade the previous owner to part from it.

- But in the end he was happy, that it ended in my stable - it is my
fav Vintage Rolex, although a bit delicate, because of the bakelite lunette..

Earth - GMT Master Ref 6542

2/ Air: Breguet Type XX Flyback Chrono in a complete set - from the earlier times of flying..

3/ Water: A cool shot on a hot day - JLC TT-DSA - EU version on a Rome afternoon

4/ Unobtrusive and “Under-the- Radar” MIH - South African Fire colors

5/ Quintessential? - JLC Universal Time, makes my thoughts wander..

JLC still my favorite collecting field..

- Hope the above is somewhat within the theme and you liked these a bit !..

Best, hs smile smile

It's time for Wrist Scan, folks! . . .

. . . let's share our four essential and solitary quintessential watches. These would be the four watches you'd never let go, along with the watch you most closely identify with. The Earth watch in my collection would be the Seiko Sea Lion. Dad bought thi...

Dear Art,

here's my essential four, from the current crop of both 'low-end', and 'high-end' pieces that I have.... Two of the inexpensive watches were, unsurprisingly, gifts from my mother and brother, and thus have monumental emotional value, on top of being genui...

The 1921 is a bit surprising . . .

 By: Dr No : April 15th, 2022-18:44
. . . as I was expecting a more utilitarian choice as your quintessential. Kudos for swimming against the tide! Art

Good point!

 By: InHavenPro : April 15th, 2022-19:37
The only other option would have been the Speedmaster, but I felt that the 1921, despite being a dress watch, was even more in line with representing the pure essence of time-telling than the Speedie . With the Speedie, I feel my admiration is somewhat mo...

Likewise Abel!!

Much appreciated, Filip

Thanks,

 By: InHavenPro : April 16th, 2022-18:19
I thought they fit Art's theme this weekend the most so I specifically brought them out of 'storage' for this purpose . Your choices are highly inspired as well!! Cheers, Filip

It’s not about the sticker…

 By: KMII : April 17th, 2022-06:16
But about what the pieces do for you! Cherish and enjoy them and I hope the 1921 joins soon 🤞🏻👌🏻

Thanks Kristjan!

I, fortunately, never suffered from 'brand image' self-perception. I come from a family of Eastern European scientists who were as rigorously intellectual with me as any family gets. I've always deeply loved traditional horology, but at the same time I do...

With these people one often has nothing to prove through a watch anyway 😉

 By: KMII : April 17th, 2022-07:59
But as you say, it’s about one’s own enjoyment, not anybody else 😊👍🏻

The 5 elements… great theme, Art… Took me places. Hagwe, all 🍻

 By: Stoikos : April 15th, 2022-17:31
Agni, Hindu god of fire (root of ignite) Poseidon, Greek god of the sea Coatlicue, Aztec earth goddess, and of life and death Yahweh, Hebrew sky god It’s beautiful… Finally, the Fifth Element She was always the divine within, not an object… My empty wrist...

Now, that's . . .

 By: Dr No : April 15th, 2022-20:49
. . . deep! No quintessential Stoikos watch . . . I'm reminded of The Preacher in Ecclesiastes. Art

I threw in an Indiana Jones joke and a scantily clad lady to lighten it up some….

 By: Stoikos : April 15th, 2022-21:59
I’ll have to read about the Preacher. Happy Easter 🍻

For the 5th you are so very right 👌🏻

 By: KMII : April 17th, 2022-06:18
And so very imaginative with the first four 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

I really am lost for words!

Hello dear Art! Nice to have you hosting and with a great challenging and thoughts provoking Theme.

 By: Subexplorer : April 15th, 2022-18:06

Ha ha ha!! That´s a good candidate dear Art. You are right. I just intended to share a different watch brand for each element. This is a favorite Omega for me too of course.

 By: Subexplorer : April 16th, 2022-12:50
I thought also about the Friendship Flightmaster but I had an Omega for Fire already. Have a nice weekend my dear friend. Happy Easter Season! Abel

Spoilt for choice with these beautiful watches …

 By: Cpt Scarlet : April 15th, 2022-21:41
All are superb in their own way. The moonshine and the Submariner reference 5508 really are very special. Happy Easter my dear friend.

Thank you Abel !

Some of our shared pleasures, such as the Rolex 1655, The PP 5110 G World Time - you displayed them with nice backgrounds and cute epiphemalia; also I liked your IWC Pilot ( including the DC3, if I’m not mistaken) ! Wishing you a further great Easter week...

Thank you so much for your always kind comments dear friend HS!!

 By: Subexplorer : April 16th, 2022-21:24
Yes, of course we share the owning of several pieces as our horological tastes seem to be close! The DC3 scale plane I borrowed from my son collection. A classic plane for a classic watch I felt. I send you also my best wishes for a peaceful Easter Season...

So very you, Abel!

 By: KMII : April 17th, 2022-06:21
And a wonderful and personal explanation provided for each of them! I very much agree on the quintessential one too but also like that you dress it up as a traveller and explorer - a cherry on the cake 🍒

Now this is why I dont always bother contributing to these threads! 😆

Tremendous personal selection Art …

 By: Cpt Scarlet : April 15th, 2022-21:37
and a great theme. How could anything surpasses the sentiment of the Omega your Dad bought in January '66. Wonderful that you have it.

The first watchmaker who serviced it . . .

 By: Dr No : April 15th, 2022-21:47
. . . said he could tell the owner was a hardworking man. He was right, too. 😌

A watch to treasure dear Art!!

I’m sure he was.

 By: Cpt Scarlet : April 17th, 2022-10:54

Dear Art, let me start by the end first ...The quintessential watch of my collection is without a doubt the Up/Down

By: Chronometer (aka yacomino) : April 16th, 2022-13:27
It is refined yet simple, it can be bold yet relatively incognito...i will post the other selections in a seperate post later. Best, Chronometer ...

The 1815 up-and-down is an immensely appealing watch . . .

 By: Dr No : April 16th, 2022-13:57
. . . and one of two Langes I've considered acquiring, the other being the side-step. The harmony of the design combined with flawless execution is deeply compelling. Art

Thanks Art! A joy to own and to wear

By: Chronometer (aka yacomino) : April 16th, 2022-14:40

I love the Up/down Lange dear friend Yacomino! And those red croc straps…

Beautiful Lange 🍻

...

All! ;))

 By: KCLQMULKU : April 17th, 2022-15:03
You must have all three lined up in a group shot! They go well with one another. The old, "different yet similar" oxymoron cliche. 😆

Very cool 😎

Thank you Captain!

Your Venus de Milo is indeed exotic, Art.

 By: Stoikos : April 16th, 2022-13:38
Always a pleasure to see your Flightmaster. (Are you a fan of the vintage Mark II racing dial?) And I recall your father’s handsome watch.

Not only am I a fan of the racing Mk II . . .

It’s great you got to experience the watch. If I buy another one, I believe it’ll be a vintage MII. I read Ecclesiastes. Powerful. I understand your reference. It overlaps with stoicism and also Hamlet. Clearly Mr. Shakespeare was influenced by it.

Let’s see whether something such comes…

Great choices dear friend HS!! I see you also choose…

… a World Timer as your quintessential watch! Once again share the feeling about this most romantic and dreams provoking complication. Lovely collages as usual you are posting to share your beautiful elements watches to answer the Theme of this weekend!! ...

The quintessential surprises a little bit…

 By: KMII : April 17th, 2022-06:36
The others are so very, very you! Definitely love the shots - so in line with the elements, too and what a selection 👌🏻🙌🏻

Thx for your kind comments.. And Yes, deliberating between a Memovox from my stables.. The dial of the World Time has a special charme for me..

 By: hs111 : April 17th, 2022-08:21
Although you might be right, also a TT Polaris or DSA might have been alternatives, but as the UT- WT delivers some nice little complication, such as the GyroLab Balance wheel + hacking second, (plus a dial with special character - love this Earth Map) it...

Not saying it’s not a worthy contender 😊

 By: KMII : April 17th, 2022-09:42
Just wasn’t aware it was top of your list. Could have imagined your black dial Duometre in this role, too 😊👍🏻👌🏻

Hello, K !.. Touché, the Duomètre à Chronographe is at least as close to my heart !

somehow special to me. Still I will pick these 4. I hope some day I will post my own “grail”, the PP Calatrava. Best. ...

You've covered all the bases with a wide range . . .

 By: Dr No : April 16th, 2022-16:40
. . . of manufacturers and types. Not surprising at all that your quintessential watch would be a Purist's delight! Art

I certainly understand the no sale sentiment 😊

 By: KMII : April 17th, 2022-08:00
And hope to be able to stick to it for as long as I want, too 👍🏻🤞🏻 Four very nice choices and a cool goal for the quintessence, too 👌🏻

Also, I never have sold a fountain pen.

The Ploprof is a legend !

Ok I will have a go…

 By: ChristianDK : April 16th, 2022-15:09
I often think about this theme as I like to deduct to find the essentials in things I do. The same goes for my watch interest. I sometimes think of downsizing my collection to a minimum and just be done with it.I suppose many of us entertain this thought....

Defined and deliberate, Christian - we've much . . .

Hahaha,

I love that your quintessential is the 'younger brother' of my quintessential (am I mistaken as to the timeline of first release of this one??). I totally love the quirky uniqueness of it, just as I do with the 1921, and the plain, time-only dial is exact...

:))

Your quintet is both amazing and so very you!

Happy Easter Art and friends ! Yes, it’s a track by the Bee Gees ;-), but it’s also the question that I’ve been contemplating since Art gave us this thought provoking theme. Starting with the Roger Dubuis, flamboyant and pleasurable memories, reminding me...

Happy Easter, Cap . . .

I love each these, Cpt!

 By: ChristianDK : April 17th, 2022-11:35
You have excellent taste. As we discussed in an other post I saw Robert’s RD. That dial is just something special and wonderful. Flamboyant as you put it but in a tasteful way. Best Christian

Thank you Christian …

 By: Cpt Scarlet : April 17th, 2022-11:39
This theme could be interpreted in so many different ways and choices as I’m sure you considered. I also almost chose a Rolex Explorer and a military watch. Interesting.

Exactly - it is a very interesting game to play. Great question from our friend, Art!

 By: ChristianDK : April 17th, 2022-11:49
Outcome could have been a little different as well! I also think it’s interesting that no one has come with a brand “monotheistic” reply yet. Choices of what makes a keeper are mixed up with personal stories and experiences.

Stunning photos!!! 👍
