...I have chosen to travel to the office of the Chief Designer at JLC in the early 1930s on the day that he received a letter from a British Indian Army Officer bemoaning the fact that whilst playing Polo, he and his brother officers were prone to damage their watch crystals. I feel sure I could dissuade him from the obvious reply: “Well, take the damn things off when you’re playing”. Instead, I could suggest, perhaps, a sort of swivel arrangement whereby the watch face was protected. Well, I was obviously successful and the rest, as they say, is history.
