April 30th WristScan 'Favorite Guitarists' is now off and running! . . .
Apr 30, 2021,15:05 PM
. . . let's share our idols this weekend along with the watch currently on our wrist.
Most of you know that my passion for the Stones exceeds that for watches and pool, so you'd expect Keith . . .
. . . to be my fave, and you'd be right.
But you'd be wrong if you assumed I thought he was objectively the best; he's my favorite precisely because he's in the Stones, or more accurately, is the Stones.
So, who else?
Let's start with Jeff Beck. I'm one of the lucky souls who got to see Page, Clapton, and Beck on the same stage. That night in December '83, all three played solo sets at The Forum in Los Angeles. Beck overshadowed them.
Now, Jimmy and Eric are no mean players, but much as I admire them both, my favorite Yardbird is Jeff.
Who's cooler than Steve Cropper?
If you said, "No one," you'd be right.
I'll bet no one here has seen James Calvin Wilsey.
I have; twice. What gorgeous tone he had. Sadly ended up homeless in LA . . . died a few years ago.
Let's not forget rhythm players. Jim Croce was the star, but his sidekick Maury Muelheisen. . .
. . . made the music.
Almost forgotten today: Alun Davies.
Let's see (and hear!) your favorite axemen, along with the watch currently gracing your wrist.
Art
PS - the sharp-eyed among you will have noticed the photo of Merle Haggard.
I'm not placing him on my list of favorite guitarists. The reason for selecting that particular photo is that I've strummed the very guitar he's carrying.
Not a musical bone in my body, but that's the closest I've ever come to touching the magic a guitarist makes.
