"We can be heroes . . .

Oct 04, 2018,17:17 PM

. . . just for one day."

David Bowie

Everyone's a hero at least once; by the same token, we all have heroes who inspire us.

Vin Scully, the broadcaster of the Los Angeles Dodgers for six decades, has been one of mine ever since I can remember.  His wit, charm, humility, depth of knowledge and practically poetic pattern of speaking made the games he called relishing.  Even if you're unfamiliar with baseball, listen to him call what may be the most memorable at-bat in the history of the game.

It wasn't just the tone of his voice, or delivery, or bottomless well of anecdotes that impressed: it was his ability to capture the moment and make it indelible.  He was truly peerless at his chosen craft.  Retired a few years now; taking in a game just isn't the same anymore.

A few others: Evel Knievel, motorcycle daredevil . . .

. . . who lived on his own terms like no one else; Andy Rooney, a journalist . . .

. . . who was succinct, charming and curmudgeonly in equal measure, and Alistair Cooke . . .

. . . another journalist-cum-observer whose prescience was preternatural.  I would've enjoyed meeting any of them; I did share an elevator ride with Scully once, and missed Cooke at a book-signing by a day.

Time to share the heroes that inspire you, along with . . .

. . . your watch du jour.

Hard to believe, but I was a late comer . . .

. . . to Bowie. Didn't fully appreciate him 'til later in his career. By then, it was too late . . . he toured sparingly after the '90s, and I never got to see him perform. Art

Similar story to mine. Missed him live by two weeks...

 By: agyzace : October 5th, 2018-12:25
He got his heart attack while in Germany and a few days before his Lausanne show I was going to. He never toured again.. God bless his soul. The artist of the century for me, Alex

Certainly one of the greats!

And definitely regret never having seen him play...

What a coincidence: I just spent last night at the Hansa Studios in Berlin...

Jean Pierre Rives + Minerva Pythagore Grande "Anniversary" Dial

Hero: Jean-Pierre Rives, Captain of the French Rugby XV in the 70's and 80's. One of the bravest men to ever set foot on a rugby field. As one of his opponents said: "He would put his head where I wouldn't risk my boot". He's the guy wearing the number 6 ...

do they still exist?

Yes, I still have them
