Whether vintage or modern, established brands or indies, or cased in gold, steel or platinum, 37-38mm is my sweet spot

Oct 21, 2022,15:12 PM

In increasing order of size...

A 37mm vintage Vacheron in YG

Doxa now makes dive watches, but back in the day, they made some lovely time-only watches, like this 37.5mm with a gilt dial

Modern indies in 38mm fit me well, with this Laine V38 being particularly comfortable on my wrist - I love its SS case!  Great for casual or smart casual.

And for formal occasions, I find myself reaching for this - 38mm in platinum.  A picture of calm sobriety and formality.

The WS for the 21st of October - ‘Size matters - your watch size sweet spot’ - is live

 By: KMII : October 21st, 2022-03:57
As I will be flying during the time of the regular start to WS Threads I decided to put up the post a bit earlier to ensure a timely, rather than delayed start to the proceedings. The theme for the weekend, as announced earlier, will be ‘Size matters’ - i...

Life starts at 33…

 By: KMII : October 21st, 2022-04:09
For various reasons I have never taken the plunge to grow my collection size wise, as well as numbers wise. Maybe it is my preference for watches to be reasonably light (as you might know few bracelets, too, for the same reason), maybe it’s my chicken siz...

Thanks so much!

We’re amongst the first smaller watches I got and the fantastic proportions made me a convert 😊👍🏻

I just love the look of H2

Thanks so much - a stock Felix…

With a different strap. The design and proportions are spot on, though. Thin, well proportioned and a pleasure on the wrist 😊👍🏻

So right, another awesome watch :-)

Your choice....

Thanks so much!

The electric blue toad strap does make for maximum contrast to the yellow patina of the hands and numerals 😁👍🏻

Interesting selection…

both in variety and case size. I completely agree with you about the Habring, it’s a great watch. Best regards Captain

At first I thought this 37 would wear small but when I tried it on my wrist it was just perfect A lot of people thought and said this watch (44.5)was to big but for me its a perfect sports watch Big and bulky but so cool Another big (46)watch but because ...

As you stated…

Certain watches belie their size (small or large) on the wrist - it’s when the designers did a proper job with proportions 👌🏻 All fantastic pieces you are showing, even if I have to say that the Habring and VH edge it out as my favorites in your entry thi...

Melt into your wrist. This week’s topic by KMII made me come to a realization, i cannot have it all. A new beautiful release which makes my heart flutter and wallet totally empty, may actually turn out to be a misfitting piece.

Hope the thread did not diminish the enjoyment…

Simply find your watch line-up great, the Breguet, the H2 Chrono (which was part of a Monochrome project, if I remember) and that georgeous VH are sublime pieces, so well in their proportions. Well done ! 🙂👍

Great post. It made me reflect hard and realize some pieces in my collection do not look good on my wrist. The PSM Piccadilly at 36mm. I feel, this piece melts on my wrist as the proportions are good. The Airking (due to give it to to my cousin, so I stop...

Wow- what a post 🙌🏻👌🏻

 By: KMII : October 22nd, 2022-04:37
Funny that - for me the 58 is the only BB that works on my wrist 🤷🏻‍♂️ The original size is too chunky, the 36 looks oddly small, while the 39 decidedly too large - go figure 😊 Some superb pieces in your post 🙌🏻👌🏻

With the title…

 By: KMII : October 22nd, 2022-04:41
I was expecting a Pythagore but this is an equally lovely piece 🙌🏻👌🏻

Dear KM, through the years, I realise just reading the size is not sufficient to determine the sweet spot as the case and lug designs will determine whether it sits well on the wrist.

 By: S F : October 21st, 2022-16:54
On that consideration, sizes of 41mm or even bigger can look fine without the lugs extending way beyond my wrist. For this purpose, I will show those big but still work because of overall design : ...

From 34-47, and all looking good. And watches that fit us years ago are not suddenly wrong because of changing fashions 😊

... the more "normal" sizes of other times. Guess that 36/38 mm to 40/42 mm is a very practical size. Panerai is the only exception I like due to the fact that the 47 mm case is part of the DNA of the brand. Anyway I feel the 44 and 42 sizes of this brand...

Glad if it was a thought provoking theme 😊

 By: KMII : October 23rd, 2022-06:55
And I agree, sometimes there is a reason for a larger watch 😊👍🏻

Love the shot …

Of your 1016 Rolex Explorer and I completely agree with you about the perfect size of this watch. It’s always been a firm favourite in my collection… ...

Thank you so much dear Captain. 36 mm is the ideal size.

I find the proportions are so balanced in this size. Guess Rolex understood that when they begun offering this size again after switching to 39 mm a few years ago. You share another great example which confirms our thoughts about the 36 mm size in this wa...

For my 16.5-cm wrist, the sweet spot seems to be 37 mm.

 By: Ruffian : October 22nd, 2022-02:44
Or is it 35 mm? Then again, 36 seems to be perfect: As does 38 mm: After all these years, I've come to the conclusion that size, like age, doesn't matter. Just wear it. ...

A gem of wisdom…

 By: KMII : October 22nd, 2022-04:47
As long as it fits and one likes it, it’s fine 😊👍🏻

GS Diver leaving as a result?

I hope so

 By: Cookies : October 23rd, 2022-07:14
A watch repair gentleman told me to reserve my GS SBGH273 for him. I have to let it go. Maybe with the budget, I’ll get my younger sister a good piece.

What a piece!

 By: KMII : October 22nd, 2022-15:43
Now that’s certainly something not seen every day - amazing piece and good to see it fits so well in spite of the content requiring a large size 👌🏻👍🏻

While I enjoy watch ranging from 37mm to 47mm in my collection, my preferences have evolved overtime with my preferred range now being 38-40mm in general as I tend to gravitate more toward classic looking dress watch which can be dressed down!

By: Chronometer (aka yacomino) : October 22nd, 2022-11:55
I still enjoy wearing my 47mm PAMs occasionally and my 42mm Rolex Explorer II, but most of my wear time is more 38-40 … here are a few pictures… But again it is still fun to wear bigger on the week-end HAGWE! ...

What’s your wrist diameter Yacomino

 By: Cookies : October 22nd, 2022-13:17
You are able to pull off the larger pieces at ease. Wish I could wear Panerai so well.

Let me check when I am back home

love it on the bracelet, yes.

For my 16.75cm wrist,

 By: borisundercover : October 23rd, 2022-05:25
I’d say between 33 and 37mm for a classic timepiece, can go (in some cases) up to 39/49mm for a sports / tool watch but no further. I guess it also depends on your wrist bone structure.

The bone structure will certainly have an influence 👍🏻

 By: KMII : October 23rd, 2022-06:59
Any pictures you would like to share this weekend? 😊🤞🏻

I’d love to,

But I’m not home til next Thursday, and didn’t take any watch with me 😅 they are currently enjoying their cocoon, waiting for my return (hopefully). I’ll try to make good amends for it then 🤓

Safe travels!

Great topic for this week’s Wristscan! I’ve learned along the way that for me what works is a function of many things.

 By: Timeout : October 23rd, 2022-07:03
The purpose of the watch, the materials, case color, lug to lug size, proportions of bezel to dial and whether it’s on a bracelet or strap. My collection ranges from 38mm to 44mm on my 17.2cm wrist. One of my largest is this FPJ. But the lack of lugs and ...

Some real surprises here…

 By: KMII : October 23rd, 2022-17:53
The Piaget looking much larger than the on paper size would make one believe, while some of the others work the other way. And as you well know - your collection is simply mind boggling 👌🏻🙌🏻👏🏻

Many thanks KM - and thanks for organizing this week’s event.

 By: Timeout : October 24th, 2022-06:31
The Piaget is quite an interesting watch - and still thin in absolute terms and very wearable - not too delicate. It’s been great to see so many shapes and sizes this weekend - all lovingly cared for by our knowledgeable and interesting community. I alway...

The evolving sweet spot …

 By: Cpt Scarlet : October 23rd, 2022-12:47
Hello dear KM and friends ! I find that the “Sweet Spot” depends on the watch as size should ideally be appropriate to the watch design and concept. The Zenith is a good example of this with its tribute to the airborne pioneers, the Pilot Montre d'Aréonef...

Thank you dear friend …

The Goldilocks ! … perfect name for this watch 👍

The true allrounder…

One can even swim with it (OK deep dives would be a challenge but then 99,99% of owners wouldn’t contemplate them) 😊👍🏻

Hmmhh.. Maybe really somewhat late this week.. But hopefully not too late..

 By: hs111 : October 23rd, 2022-14:59
Let me see what to chip in.. Reflecting a bit about your/our topic this week, I decided to deal a bit with the outliers, Although my general sweetspot is somewhere between 38 & maybe 41, but I do also have a weakness for the small ones; here a few of them...

Again you’re spoiling us with the background…

 By: KMII : October 23rd, 2022-17:59
As well as the watches! Lovely vintage military pieces - demonstrating that even soldiers, whose wrists did not tend to be on the slim side, managed the sizes perfectly well. This time your Longines is my absolute favorite 🙌🏻👌🏻

Thx for your kind looking, dear K !.. Also really liked your own choices.. Thx for your efforts in hosting the WS-week ! :))
