Devilish (Missing) Detail
Dec 17, 2021,16:40 PM
The year was 2015, I was taking a brief mental break at my office and perusing the 'new arrivals' section of a local unscrupulous grey dealer when my heart stopped upon seeing none other than a Lange 1 101.027x staring back at me... or was it?
Upon closer inspection I took note of the case number, and after frantically comparing to a couple auction houses realized it was only a couple individual units away from a Steel Lange 1 recently sold. My formerly beating heart then transitioned into full arrhythmia when I realized they may have a Steel Lange and not know it!
A few tense hours later I had the watch in hand, and decided that it felt 'light' as compared to my Darth L1. Brief negotiations later, a steal of a price considering no B&P, and I drove home with my head spinning - had I just captured a unicorn by accident?
Alas, my dreams were quashed after reaching out to an exceptional collector with more knowledge on the subject than I. The watch was indeed a 101.027x, which in itself is a dream Lange to own, but not one of the mythical 20 encased in steel.
Devil is always in the details, and I will concede my mind has often went back to that moment and relished in the sense of 'what-if'.
