Making a 1 Second Pendulum Clock (3D printed)

 By: DonCorson : October 27th, 2016-12:56
Pendulum clocks are fascinating me these days. And of course different ways of making them. Having recently acquired a 3D FDM printer I decided to see how (if) one could make a precision clock using this means of production. As I already had a mechanical ...

Wow very impressive!

And to a lay person like me this feels much more technical than the stuff you have shown us in the past. Is it more difficult to make than your watches?

Different

I wouldn't say a clock is more difficult, the problems are differrent. With a watch there are big part fabrication challenges coming from their small size. The clock parts are easier to handle, but one expects better timekeeping from a clock so the dificu...

Was it difficult to transition between working with a lathe and using computer for the 3D printing?

I have no experience with either but have always imagined it's two separate sets of skills for drafting and fabrication.

Yes, 2 sets of skills...

but I have always made a complete 3D model of all my watches on the computer before making them. It is a tremendious help in visualising and making sure one doesn't make really stupid mistakes. I would say that the 3D printing reduces the fun as the metal...

Hello, Thank you very much for this nice description and congratulations on your very nice clock. I had a question, what is the diameter of the barrel of the barrel? I am intrigued to see such a large Barrel wheel, how many teeth does it have? One last qu...

That\'s really crazy to think that it was made with a 3D printer. Best wishes Alkiro

That is entirely too awesome!

I have an old Japanese pendulum clock (Habino) that chimes the quarter hour and strikes on the hour... I just love having that reassuring presence in the house. I wake up at night if it doesn't sound... like when it stops after an earthquake ; ) I enjoyed...

very modern design...
