The benefit is to have a 65 days power reserve
Aug 02, 2022,10:11 AM
In simplified terms: while a high frequency gives you high precision, it will reduce your power reserve. Normally what watchmakers do is they find a compromise at the sweet spot of precision they need vs. PR they want.
With the Twin Beat, VC chose a different approach: they introduced 2 balances, one at 5 Hz for "active use" and one at 1.2 Hz for "standby mode". At 5 Hz, the watch runs within a few secs per day. When you don't wear it, you put it into standby mode and put it in the box. Here, the PR will last for 65 days. Losing precision at 1.2 Hz, you will need to adjust the time by a few minutes or hours when you take it up after 2 months, but you will not need to reset the calendar.
All in all, a novel approach to keep a perpetual calendar accurate. Most others go for an automatic movement and put it on a winder when not in use.
