Pricing equals trade off

Pricing high end watches is an art in itself.

Simple economics whereby price is the balance point between supply and demand, won’t get you far.

There are so many factors involved: costs, volume, general company pricing strategy often with distinct yet slightly overlapping price levels between different model lines and within a single model line

Add to it competition, perceived competition, innovation (first to market), any patents, geographical consistency versus geographic and demographic differences, priorities (I.e. need to grow market share or maximize profit etc) and the puzzle becomes more complicated.

Perhaps the question how the VC pricing compares against PP pricing is not as relevant as it may seem at first glance.
But the question: will you leave the boutique with a big smile on your chin after you’ve paid or will you have that nagging deep rumbling sense you may not have done a good deal?
If first then buy. If second than don’t buy.

There is only one person who can truly judge if the price is fair or not: that’s you.

Now as far as my personal views are concerned: “I belief the steel version price to be bit steep but by same token I find it also acceptable given price gaps between platinum and steel models for other lines, and given the fact that the Corne de Vache is a very special watch that sticks out and is extremely well received regardless of the metal it’s made of.

So would I buy it myself? No probably not but that’s for a very simple reason which I shared on my threat earlier today. Haha

Hope these purely personal views might be of any help

Let us know your final verdict

Is Vacheron Constantin Historiques Cornes de vache 1955 Steel too expensive?

 By: CL : November 25th, 2019-22:15
Lately I have been reading a lot more about this watch which i have an interest in getting one but I would like to see it in metal before I commit. Most people complains that this is way too expensive. The list price is about $39,800. I am thinking if thi...

It is just me haha

when I first saw the watch, I was thinking this is gonna cost me a leg and a arm but it ends up cheaper than what I expected. It is a great watch and a super grail after you have reviewed it

IMHO it is about future value

People feels VC price is too expensive because it will surely lost significant part of its value, whereas Patek price is acceptable because Patek/Nautilus value is appreciating

+10

Well said

True indeed.

I am interested in the same watch and will look for a used example two or three years down the road.

Few years from now [nt]

 By: Gelato Monster : November 26th, 2019-03:46

That's so true...

 By: CL : November 26th, 2019-06:59
it will probably be 20-25% cheaper but I think it is worth enjoying one now and let it depreciate 20-25% over the next 3 years. It must be the holiday season effect :P

Certainly true

The extra years of enjoyment have their own value. But there are so many watches on the list of watches to get!

True somefimes we Purist are so passionate (crazy stupid)

if you see how many out there are for sale.

Yes. In the past there are some watch that go theopposite way

 By: Gelato Monster : November 26th, 2019-15:11
Everybody was not buying because everyone think was is to expensive. The brand/factory stop production early 5/10 years later it become rare and the price goes to the roof.

I hope this one does not.

IMHO it is one of the more beautiful chrono. The lug is the best of all chrono. the movement is arguably neiter as majestic as lange nor as beautiful as Patek, but still very awesome

Price aside, it's a lovely watch [nt]

I mention my curiosity only because I keep hearing same collectors who owns Patek chronograph complaining about the Vacheron price being overpriced. Different metric system. Congrats to your retirement. Your watch is much more suited for your special occa...

Totally concur

Salmon would make it aristocratic. perfect.

Yep! [nt]

Black is too close to Hodinkee version...

 By: CL : November 26th, 2019-17:01
and Lange and Patek already have black chrono. The steel GDV reminds me of the 'old' 5070G and 5070R dial combined. 5070G and R dial color is very attractive in metal. Salmon is literally everywhere now which I think I'm starting to dislike it. Overdose o...

I will choose 5070G any day...

 By: CL : November 27th, 2019-06:55
sometime a classic dial color need not be too special. A bit of finesss will do wonder

Me too. ;)

From photo...

 By: CL : November 27th, 2019-11:29
many people thinks this is just a white dial but in metal, it is more than that

Not true.

 By: CL : November 27th, 2019-21:14
It is far from that. Your statement is a hype. How can a 5070 defeat a Datograph? They are just different.

😊 yes they are different [nt]

 By: Gelato Monster : November 27th, 2019-21:41

Different but always

 By: CL : November 28th, 2019-06:26
make our hearts beat faster . Dato is the BEST but hard to make me excited.

I am a movement sucker,

 By: Gelato Monster : November 28th, 2019-15:43
I am not dreaming of Dato anymore after Triple Split is born.

Not this one... :)))

Because of that: ...

Another unique Chronograph [nt]

Great...
