Dial variations
Nov 12, 2020,06:53 AM
First, apologies for the poor quality of my photo. It cannot compare to some of the other excellent images of this great watch, especially the macro of the dial above.
As you can tell from this image, there were variations in the dial manufacture for the Historiques Chronograph. You can see that the font used and the printing of the perimeter of the dial on this example differs from others posted even in this thread. Also, the brand signature on the dials is different. My experience with both this salmon dial as well as the "normal" gold version with silver dial is that the color and brightness of the dial can vary significantly from piece to piece. I think the dials may have been produced by more than one manufacturer, and I have heard about the dial inconsistency from at least one other reliable source. This example has a rather dull salmon color whereas others I have seen (in person) have appeared as a quite bright pink. Photos of the watch don't always tell the whole story. Photos can be altered while the light sources and the surface background behind the watch can also affect the appearance of the dial color significantly. I had a gold version with "silver" dial, but the dial color on my example was actually a lovely ivory color that had a lot of warmth. It is just something to be aware of when hunting one of these marvelous chronographs.
As much as I love the 47101, I did have some hesitation about how it sits on my largish and flat wrist. This has to do not only with the size of the case but also the design of the lugs and how they curve downward toward the wrist, in my case causing the watch to sit up slightly on my wrist rather than conforming to the shape of the wrist. Again, the fit is also just something to be aware of when hunting one of these especially if one has not had the opportunity to try one on in person.
All that said, the Historiques Chronograph 47101/47111 is an amazing piece from Vacheron Constantin. I am considering the newer Cornes de Vache, which I think fits my wrist better. The update to the movement over that in the 47101 is appealing. I do love the dial configuration of the 47101, with or without the fantastic guilloche, I like both. The typical price differential between the 47101 and CdV is also a consideration.
It's always nice to see t\and discuss the Historiques Chronograph.
Cheers,
