Chrono 4111 - rare find or frank?

Jan 11, 2022,07:53 AM

Next week on Artcurial auction will be sold extremely rare V&C chronograph ref 4111. If I recall it right (article about VC chrono's was published on THL), only 3 pcs in YG were produced in late 30s-40.
This particular watch (lets call it watch Nr2) looks amazing with clear dial and hands and pretty good case. Nr 422590 / 267133

BUT...
Previously we saw the only one timepiece with this reference bearing Nr 42065 / 261747. Let's call it watch Nr1
And this watch was also featured in Lambelet/Coen book 'The world of Vacheron Constantin' issued in 1992.

You dont need to be a detective to recognize differences in tachimeter scale, in 12 and 6 markers, in subdials etc. Watch Nr2 has different type of second hand and hand on subdial at 3.
Is it due to 3 years difference in production date (1937 and 1940)? Is it a later replacement? Was it made by VC or not?
Whats your opinion?

With best regards,
Serge

P.S. Dean's comments are welcome wink

as posts dedicated to prices aren't allowed. But the discussion about the watch itself is fine and I'm pleased you've highlighted this piece. As you know, the more valuable a vintage V&C, the greater scrutiny one should apply. I wish more sellers woul...

Thank you, Dean

for correction, and sorry for price info, dont wanted to break the rules (( Fully agree with you, only Extract can mislead buyers (and auction house as well) and is not enough to check and evaluate a watch. Hopefully the watch is redialed at VC, but I dou...

My theory: it's both!

The same case design was used for both; first as photo reference 3768 in 1937 with cal. 295 based on a Martel ebauche, subsequently changed to model reference 4111 in 1939 when the photo reference system was discontinued. For the 4111, the movement was ch...

The picture is not clear, but through careful observation, it seems that the small dial at 3:00 is still 45 minutes. I feel it is very difficult to find a vintage V&C which made before 1940, with a completely original dial.

45 min

and the hand as on Antiquorum watch, not as Nr2 With best regards Serge

Indeed the same case (it would be great to find pic of case back for both references to check the producer). Do you have it occasionally? )) Different ebauchee, I agree. Probably also pulsometer vs tachimeter scale? Only 6 pcs vs 3 pcs? Without photos and...

In 1939, after V&C and JLC cooperated in 1938

The stock movements before cooperation were still used. Therefore, on some models from 1939 to 1940, the style of dials and hands were close to the time before 1938.

since there are doubts...

I wouldn't bid/buy it. Extract des Archives doesn't prove authenticity.

Unfortunately not ((

Pity. I was inspired when found this watch for sale, because it could be the second known example for 4111... With best regards Serge
