A late-comer on the RO bandwagon, with its own unique charms

Released in 1977, the 222 was ostensibly released to celebrate VC's 222nd anniversary but in reality it was to cash in on the popularity of the Royal Oak which launched 5 years earlier.  Other brands didn't believe that a steel watch could command luxury prices until then, and once Patek got onboard in 1976 with their Nautilus, well VC had to follow.  Not only was this steel trinity aimed at the same market, they also shared the same ultra-flat automatic movement, versions of the JLC 920.


I enjoyed a two-tone 222 with date for awhile and found it pleasantly slim and comfortable, one of those watches you can easily forget you are wearing until needed.
