TimeOut forum P.O.W.W #6: Long Range Rifles
Last spring, I bought a Blaser Tactical 2 300 Win Mag. I really liked the gun. But, the recoil was beyond my limits. The combination of my light frame and the magnum's kick just didn't work. So, I sold it.
As I said, I really liked the rifle. So, in early November, I purchased a Blaser LRS chambered in 6.5x284 Norma. Great long range ballistics; much lower recoil than the 300wm. A Thunderbeast 30P-1 suppressor should tame the kick (and hopefully my flinch!) I plan on using 140 grain loads running around 3100 fps. The rifle is topped with a Schmidt & Bender 5.5-25x56 PMII scope.
I live and hunt in an archery only section of Texas. With respect to the other bow hunters nearby, we do not use rifles at our range until after deer season. So, I can't (won't) play with my new toy until the middle of January! I can't wait to trade in my bow for my new rifle!

X-lent choice, John

You picked an outstanding rifle/cartridge combo'. The 6.5X284 is a screamer w/o the recoil. There are some very high coefficient bullets for the 6.5 out there. If your rifle chamber can handle a 3.1 OAL load, it will perform way beyond expectation. I read...
Thank you.

Thank you. Many competition shooters are using 6.5mm. From what I have read, it has a magical resistance to the wind. I think the light recoil and After I develop a proper load, I think this is going to be my go to caliber for hunting and target shooting....
Excellent rifle

Very nice set up for a long range rifle. I'm intrigued by the bolt design of the Blaser LRS, the push/pull straight bolt action feels different than a typical Remington 700PSS where it has a standard rotate and pull bolt action. Looking forward to hearing...

I had the same action in 300 win mag. The bolt pull was very smooth, with quick follow up shots. But, I didn't send many follow up shots down range - it kicked like a mule. I will post a review when I finally get a chance to shoot it. John
