There's an RAF story in my family, too . . .

. . . albeit thru friendship rather than blood relation.
Mom's dearest friend was Aunt Elizabeth. Elizabeth married Uncle Bernard a year or two before Mom married Dad. Elizabeth was Irish, Bernard technically American (born in NYC) but his parents were British and Venuzuelan. Bernard served in the RAF (radio operator or gunner in a Lancaster, can't remember which) but too late to see actual combat. He was stationed in the Middle East near the end of the war; came down with a disease, which had him back in the UK by war's end.
Elizabeth and Bernard were so close to our family that I always called them Aunt and Uncle.

Uncle Bernard passed away April of last year. He was one of a kind.
