Hey Art, I was a big fan of the Pretenders too. I remember seeing them and a lot of other memorable shows at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium which was a great smaller venue fairly close to the beach. I worked at the Greek Theater in Los Angeles during the early 80's and got to see all of the shows there. All of us in the parking lot crew were pretty excited when the B-52's opened for the Talking Heads. The B-52's were the nicest and most down to earth people by miles to all of us working stiffs. They invited us to watch them rehearse and were genuinely happy to sign our autographs. Coincidentally, I'm going to see them next week a a little local club near my house. Of course I listened to music in the similar genre -- Elvis Costello, the Police. etc.
My favorite of the 80's, however, was Tom Petty. Still my favorite. During those days he sang so many poignant songs about women mistreating all of us guys -- Don't Do Me Like That, I Need to Know, The Waiting and She's a Woman in Love (but it's not me), Even though I'm a die hard fan, I'm surprised but thrilled at the longevity of his commercial success. But, now that he's done the Super Bowl, I get the feeling that he won't have anymore hits for awhile. Really glad I saw him last year at the Troubadour, another great venue.
