Thank You Jay!

I'll go and find that NPR interview! Thank you for your comments. YES! I'm very scared to send RIMOWA luggage under the plane. Nowadays, it's just too risky. I find that the Salsa Trunk (now called Essential Trunk) (but not the Salsa Air/Essential Lite) does well in checked luggage. If I know I'm going somewhere where I'll be traveling entirely by car, I'll actually put my metal Rimowa luggage in boxes to protect them! I still like the idea of clamshell luggage over zippers. Even though zippers don't get catastrophic misalignments that the clamshells do. Clamshells are much more secure and water resistant, zippers can be defeated with a ballpoint pen sometimes. But in practicality for checked luggage, zippers probably survive.

On rare occasions the RIMOWAs get to travel in their own boxes!

I'm likely going to be using more AWAY luggage for checked luggage in the future. The RIMOWA is nice, but there is some worry about damage in transit. If you're not transporting sensitive machinery (RIMOWA or PELICAN case job) and you're mainly transporting clothing, the AWAY works just fine! Another thing I've realized is that you shouldn't fill the luggage to the point it's overweight. It's the weight of its own contents that damages the luggage when there is a mishap and the luggage falls down a conveyor belt.

Thanks for the great reviews. I have used Tumi canvas bags.

You get used to filling up the case to the allowed weight. So changing bags is a hesitation. But do need an upgrade. And yes the new Tumi stuff ain’t cheap. Thanks Bill

Thank you Bill!

I've noticed so many things over the many years and many pieces of luggage that I've owned. I thought I wanted to summarize some of my experience.

Seems to be similar to Horizn Studios luggage

which I like.

Extremely good eye! Definitely very similar if not identical.

I don't have a Horizn Studios case to compare it with side by side. But the polycarbonate plastic, the handle bars, the extension handle, the locks, the wheels, and even the zippers seem to be very similar if not identical. Probably made by the same suppl...

Thanks Patrick.

Typo Correction

 By: patrick_y : July 24th, 2023-18:50
When I travel by car, I don't bother protecting the luggage, since I will have more control of the luggage than I would if I travel by plane. My original post indicated otherwise.

I have got AWAY, Tumi, and MONOs hybrid clamshell being the nicest.

I am enjoying the ease of opening and closing the clam shell with two clasps vs having to unzip the entire enclosure to open and close the case. I think I recall seeing this write up a couple years ago but glad to see it pop up with your typo update.

Very nice! I noticed you are a very good dresser, especially during hunting season! Elegant and practical.

Good dressers generally do have good luggage! And Away is very practical luggage!
