I understand what he means perfectly and even in today's world it truly resonates with me.
Unfortunately I have known far too many people that are incapable of having peace in their own company and always needed to be with others. Whereas I have always been happiest in my own company knowing my own mind and not caring quite so much for the company or thoughts of others. Except when I was still able to have my Dobermann's and then it was me and them v the world.

One could argue that the statement has been flipped, nowadays unhappiness is mostly coming from not leaving the room, funny times we're living in...

Well seeing as you mentioned him, I think his most famous quote is apt and an ethos I aspire to.
