I am always confused when reading about hawks and falcons ....

... because of being unable to recognize the difference. When translated into German, both terms generally are interpreted als "Falke", which is one of the smallest birds of prey. Your pictures clearly show what in German would be a "Habicht", al larger bird. So clearly hawks and falcons are two different families.
Where I live, we do not have many hawks, but a lot of falcons and the much larger buzzards, which, to make my confusion complete, also often seem to be called "hawks" in English sometimes.

Watch your tail my friend! A hawk may land a missile of "bird dropping" on you! But more likely than not, he probably likes your bird feeder and wants to eat one of your small bird guests!
