Traditionally, my country has tight relations with Coratia, and therefore it is not surprising that Austrians consider it rather normal, and a logical step that Croatia is entering the EU; we are only puzzled that it took so long ...
On the other hand, we Austrians are also very critical, somtimes overly sceptical about the EU, which I consider a problem. During the Cold War, we were protected by the danger of a nuclear war between the big military blocks, so we did not have to take care for ourselves. Now this is different and Austria has difficulties to accept that actions always have consequences.
However, the EU has proven to work - basically. it is similar to an old marriage, where everyday conflicts might appear to be the rule, but underneath is a deep and solid understanding that we belong together and alone would be in a much worse situation.
I am looking forward to welcome Croatian Erasmus students in my lectures!
Best regards,
Marcus
