Fine guns vs. luxury watches

 By: jleno : January 1st, 2021-08:01
I've been looking a little bit at high-end "art" guns recently. Some are incredibly impressive, and I wonder if they are perhaps better artistic value for the money compared to watches. Most are too pretty to ever consider shooting though. I'd be curious ...

Those are spectacular

And the price for some of these is equally spectacular!

Yes, not any less expensive than very high end watches unfortunately :)

The Haussmann guns are actually quite reasonably priced I think. You can get something a little more basic for low-mid 5 figures.

Funny, I was just thinking the same thing, I think for the $ you do get more handwork in custom firearms than watches and at a scale that you can appreciate - no loupe required - and shooting is a more active/tactile experience than wearing

To me the biggest difference is I can wear a watch all the time so for me my enjoyment per $ is higher with the watch than the firearms. Also much easier to hide a new watch from the wife Some beautiful stuff though. If you have the means and the space......

Yep, you can spend well over 30k on a German watch and get a tiny amount of engraving on a balance cock...

Or for the same amount, you can get an Austrian gun that looks like this: ...

Yes! And as a collectible I think firearms have some advantages over watches

No regular service, you can clean and oil yourself, no proprietary screws or silicon bits, any good gunsmith will be able to service these for decades even if the brand is gone.

Hehe, i’m also afraid of a complaining family member. Said, why another new watch? The asking vows in the face. I well, i wanted the watch, because it makes me happy. F you have already nice watches, why not buy a car for me? I Huuum, (my thoughts) that c...

lol my gf will certainly prefer me buying a nice car over another watch or an engraved gun

So maybe there's no point in pondering the latter options

machines that tell time vs machine to kill

Sorry to rock your boat..to each his own..no I don't think they can compare in any way, I also don't think that there is any value in weapons ! Watches, well a different story. May be this was better suited for "weapons meandering"...

Hahah no worries, I understand guns can be a polarizing topic :)

Again though, these are display pieces and more about the engraving, wood work, craftsmanship, etc. As far as I know, almost nobody is going to be using guns like these for any actual shooting or hunting.

I think a watch is more versatile, you can wear it and show it to anyone. Perhaps these..

are more for display in the house...of course the craftmanship is pretty unique. I appreciate the craftmanship just I wouldn't see myself spending the same money as I did for a watch

I think people who collect these...

 By: MiguelFlash : January 1st, 2021-09:23
Are like those who collect antique swords or suits of armor etc. for their beauty and craftsmanship. The MET in NYC has a spectacular permanent exhibit of suits of armor and weaponry that are considered art, hence their inclusion in the museum.

👍🥂

Wonderful masterpieces!

 By: ZSHSZ : January 1st, 2021-09:47
A couple of years ago, when Richemont bought Purdy I attended an exhibition in NY and I was analyzed by the craftsmanship and know how needed to fabricate this shotguns/rifles. If we compare the engraving, wood carving, metallurgy involved, with the mostl...

Thanks and happy to new year to you as well!

Interesting, I wasn't aware that Purdey is part of Richemont. I don't know too much about guns yet, but I do think the value proposition some brands are offering is very intriguing from what I've seen so far. Will definitely have to look out for the oppor...

The area of pens

 By: Weems@8 : January 1st, 2021-16:20
Oh, the water finds it’s way to pens. I can not help reading montblanc thinking about roller balls. Writing is are fine thing. Meandering is sailing on wind, discover new worlds. Montblanc, the famous white mountain in Europe. I never took a hike on that ...

A Purdey is something you might be lucky enough to commission before you order that G650.

 By: U3O8 : January 1st, 2021-20:04
I have neither a Purdey nor a G650 (most likely never) but a man can dream, or live vicariously through some Purists who may have one or both.

Just looked up production numbers for a couple of gun makers...

 By: jleno : January 1st, 2021-20:59
Purdey makes about 75 guns with about 60 employees. Similar numbers for others like Holland & Holland as well. So the production/employee ratio for these companies is on par with Greubel Forsey...Seems less surprising now that these guns easily go int...

Greubel Forsey pricing as well then :)

Are there forums similar to WPS for guns like these btw? I wasn't able to find any from briefly searching online...

I certainly appreciate some nice engravings!

Aquanaut + Merkel. ...

Terrific pair!

Owning both, would you rather put your money towards watches or guns in general?

Good question

 By: w220 : January 4th, 2021-16:40
It's nice to have a bit of both, and thankfully I live in a location where I can have many different type of things.
