fellow members here on the forum that suggested it. I happened to know this wonderful craftsman here in Thailand who does some superb work with reclaimed wood from old buildings and turned to him for design and execution. So really all credit to them!

You know? They say some of the wood from Southeast Asia is the most expensive? My family is originally from Laos, and people from China are buying old houses made from Redwood Trees because the wood is worth so much money!!!!

In fact, I see more of Laos from my bedroom window than Thailand! Indeed, it is true that a lot of the old houses and structures and objects have been bought up by people for the wood. Unfortunately, a lot of illegal logging and smuggling of rosewood and ...

..in 1975. We woke up one morning to see a couple of tanks with red stars in the middle of town and Pathet Lao soldiers in the streets. My job didn’t last long after that!

My dad was working for the former government at the time and was scared for his life. Totally a sea of change in the 70s for all of Southeast Asia, reminds me also of the loss of life due to the Khmer Rouge.

That whole area was on fire, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, of course.

Unfortunate though that so much human capital is still being wasted or misused in some of those countries. Able, hardworking people.

I was working in a foreign aid programme (not US) and the PL soldiers were cheerful even friendly. But the new government quickly decided that they didn’t want any foreigners in the country outside Vientiane so we were pulled out. But I can imagine that l...
