Soldering a Seiko
May 31, 2022,20:20 PM
Hi all,
I have an older Seiko clock that chimes the quarter hours (Westminster Chime) and indicates time, day and date. It's got a normal quartz movement which would usually take one AA battery, but in this clock a separate power supply box controls the clock motor and the chimes.
Due to a bit of corrosion, the very fragile wires had broken and needed to be reconnected to the circuit board. While I was toying with this, using my large soldering gun (having lost my little soldering iron somewhere around the house) I began to wonder if soldering is a lost skill, like operating a clutch and manual transmission.
As the clock is now repaired and back to chiming, I thought I would pose the question here.
To be fair, I define "soldering" as "Carefully using a pin-point heat source to melt a lead-tin wire (the solder), in order to join two or more other metal electrical conductors".
Soldering can also be used to join pipes and other metal objects, but in this case I am talking about electrical joints.
What do you think? DO you ever solder anything or know anyone who does?
Cheers,
Cazalea
PS - the last joints I repaired on the Jaguar ABS module

Dad taught me to solder when I was 5. It's easy to get it right, or wrong. I'd say more, yet there are books dedicated to the 'art'.

Sorry, birdie. When I was in high school I wanted out of math class and asked to be in auto shop. My advisor would not allow me to do that, so offered as a compromise “Electricity & Electronics”. In hindsight that was one of the most important/valuable cl...

I don’t know of anyone who is really an authority. Seiko has produced hundreds or thousands) of clock varieties , mechanical and electrical, digital and analog, pendulum or spring-driven, chiming, animated, etc. I probably have st least a couple of each v...
