When your watch is stolen...what to do

Jul 14, 2020,14:28 PM

Stolen watch? Next steps:
  • File a police report (regardless of whether insured or not)
  • Report to the major stolen watch registries (TWR, Alpha Hands, mystolenwatch)
  • Report to your insurance company if applicable
  • Report to manufacturer
  • Post loss online to watch forums
  • Report to major pawn shops and dealers in your area

Other tips:
  • Make sure you have the serial number, purchase receipts/proof of ownership and pictures
  • Insure as necessary
  • Consider a home safe (or safe deposit box)
  • Be aware of your surrounding - all too many stories of watches snatched when owners aren't paying attention (talking on cell phones, interacting with strangers, etc.)
  • Don't be flashy

TL-15 or TL-30

Either a TL-15 or TL-30 is a great idea for home if you have the space (and funds). There are insurance companies that will also provide a discount if you have a certain level of security, often combined with weight requirement. The benefit to this level ...

Ha, yeah, it's definitely not going anywhere at 360kg!

A bank deposit box isn't always as safe as one might want: www.nytimes.com So, a TL-15 seems like a decent idea. Thanks for the link, I'll have a look!

I read that NYT article when it first came out

What a horrific thing to happen to that collector. Plain and simple there is no perfect solution

It was a very interesting article.

Reading what these investigators do to track down stolen watches is pretty interesting. While they may be able to help, it’s never guaranteed.

That's it. [nt]

A safe in the home can turn a burglary into an armed robbery.

Instead, 1) Hire a security professional to assess the vulnerable access points in your home. 2) Get an alarm system. 3) Get a dog. 4) Get a safe deposit box. 5) Regardless of all of the above, get insurance.

Good advice, thanks. I already have the security system.

However, I am concerned that a bank deposit box may not be safe: www.nytimes.com

I must agree. I stayed away from a home safe, fearing armed robbery, ending with a bad outcome

I ended up getting a safe deposit box in a bank that's walking distance from my home, so i can change watches on the way to a specific event, if needed.

I found it difficult to find a bank near my home

And my bank fault is an hour away from my home. So i just try to not look rich so nobody thinks of trying to steal something from me.

Home robbery

I believe that most robberies of watches, jewelry and other goods occur when the homeowner is not present. I haven't as I recall read of any case where someone on the forum was robbed while at home and their watches taken, but have read a number of thefts...

And if they are at home

Is there a greater chance of a massacre due to there being a safe? Would be great to see any stats available - thanks!

! If you ever see any stats, would love to know what happens with a owner has a safe v no safe

I've never seen that before, but it would be interesting to know probability of property theft while the owner is home, and if there is more harm if there is a safe v no safe (and then also if the thief knows about the safe and then also what happens if t...
