And so it was with my 16570.
Enjoyed it to the fullest. The first Rolex I fell in love with and my first Rolex. A great travel buddy. It was a daily wearer for awhile before other pieces came into the picture. Then at some point, my preference shifted to black dials, further extending its hibernation inside the watchbox. I’d pull it out from time to time just to make sure it was still ticking or if I needed a GMT because, hey, it’s hard to track that 1 hour difference between Tokyo and Manila :-p
For years I’ve thought about parting with it. I hate the idea of having stuff that I don’t use especially when there’s a significant monetary value assigned to it. But nostalgia would hold me back and also my laziness to sell. Besides, it really is a nice watch and still prefer it over the 6 digit polar.
With all this in mind, I made a little pact with myself. I will surrender to serendipity. That is, if the time is right to let go, it should be naturally effortless. The transaction should feel right. The whole ownership experience should come to a full circle.
And so it did. I have several personal horological friendships, if you will. The kind where you’re always exchanging messages and pics with each other with all things related to watches. Wrist shots of my polar would grace this conversation every now and then not realizing that it was feeding somebody else’s desire to get a 5 digit polar reference. In time, it would surface and he would show me specimens of what was out there. He was about to pull the trigger on a piece that I did not feel would do justice to his journey.
So I offered mine instead. First owner. Unpolished. Better than what I have seen locally for sale for the past several years. Full set incl purchase and RSC service receipts. A watch he has been brainwashed with hahaha! I’m on my tail end enjoying this piece and he’s about to embark on his.. it just made sense
On his wrist.. all’s well that ends well.
