Great old article from Hodinkee regarding the watches of 3 famous sailors.

Back before GPS, quartz watches, atomic clocks, and personal computers professionals and adventurers relied on their Rolex watches as part of their tool kit and not jewelry.

Francis Chichester's Oyster Perpetual which he wore on his 1966-67 solo-circumnavigation of the globe.  This watch is now owned by Rolex themselves and kept in their archives IIRC.

Then there is the Rolex Explorer 1016 worn by Robin Knox-Johnston, the winner of the Sunday Times Golden Globe around the world solo race in 1969.  The watch has been blasted by sun (UV) and wind and salt water.  This watch is also in the possession of Rolex now.

Finally, there is the watch of Bernard Moitessier, the Frenchman who was Knox-Johnston's fellow competitor during the Golden Globe and actually could have won if he didn't decide to keep on sailing almost another circumnavigation of the globe instead of finishing the race.  Moitessier was like a guru of sailing and somewhere, sometime during the race he abandoned his old life (including his wife) to live free on the waves.  He wore a Rolex GMT-Master ref. 1675, but this watch has not been found although there are many photos of him wearing it like the one below.
