In layman’s can someone tell me that difference in 904 and 916 steel in watches.

If you do..... Rolex pioneered the development of the 904 and (I believe) is the only manufacturer with its own foundry. The steel was an upgrade on prevailing steel in that it was less likely to react to various acids. It had some copper added that made ... 

I believe Breguet catalogues tout having their (or Swatchgroup's) own foundry as well. Not 904 steel, though! [nt]

For the 316/904 distinction, there are pictures online somewhere of the results of prolonged acid exposure to 316 (corroded) and 904 (no effect). Iirc, 316 is very slightly more scratch resistant and 904 is very slightly more shiny, but please confirm wit...

Thanks folks and I meant 316. Probably for me I would not be able to know the difference.

Keep in mind that the corrosion resistance of both metals is far beyond what would be encountered in the real world

Found that some of the higher nickel content alloys had less of an allergic response in some cases. I remember 904l coming out well for sufferers despite its high Ni content. Google search can probably find the paper.

This was written in response to a different question but the content is relevant..... Rolex 904L and more That 904L was used in Rolex watches was really never in doubt, the question was more was it the case and back? Your post doesn�t specifically confirm...
