Something that made me smile.

Jan 09, 2023,10:56 AM

I recently was onboard a flight to the Balearic Islands with 2 friends for some boys fun. Having drank the obligatory 3/5 pints in the lounge and then onboard the flight it was time for the little boys room at the front of the aircraft. As we were sat together my 2 friends and myself all decided to go together. Stood at the front of the aircraft waiting for the toilets to become vacant I noticed 3 middle aged Men sat on the front row. Looked to me like golfers. Now you will all recognise what happened next as watch enthusiasts. The 3 of them were all wearing Rolex. They had 2 submariners and a yellow gold YM. My 2 buddies had their Kermit and Explorer 2 on. I on the other hand had my Tudor Chrono on. As we stood for a few minutes I saw all 3 checking out our watches bearing in mind they were only a few feet away they couldn’t conceal their excitement at seeing fellow watch owners. I heard them talking discussing what we had on. Yes that’s a Kermit the lead golfer said then a few seconds later the other said yes and that’s an Explorer 2 then there was a pause. I heard the lead expert say no no it’s not ummmm is it? the other one said. Ummmmm ah no the lead said with disappointment In his voice it’s just a Tudor.
My black Tudor Chrono had been described as just a Tudor.
This made me smile so much and even more proud of my poor man’s Rolex.

When we got back to our seats I told my friends whom have both been with me on my journey for over 25 years of watch collecting. They both laughed and said if only they knew.
Go and tell them one said. Not a chance I said they will have a much better golfing trip as it is.

Maybe 15 years ago I may have showed them a picture of my Daytona collection but now with Maturity not a chance just an Inward smile.

I’m sure many here have been in a similar position. Just made me smile.

M.

Arrogance versus true watch passion. A Classic.

You did very well not to tell them what you have in your collection. That would not have been elegant, and they would have had a heart attack. )) You are more than right to be proud of your Tudor. These guys will never understand. Best, my friend. Nicolas...

True my friend.

What is even funnier is that all that trip you can imagine the banter about “my S##T Tudor “ ever opportunity they had. More smiles created by our watch obsession. M.

Don’t worry I don’t ;)

Fantastic narrative right from the first Ale of the trip to the end post-bathroom!

In any event, true horological enthusiasts will judge a man’s intent and passion for timepieces rather than whatever may be on the wrist at a single point in time. My favourite timepieces include Seiko and Casio as well as more luxe Swiss pieces that gran...

Thank you Dave.

You are absolutely right and so funny not sure if your age but at 8 my first watch was also a Casio but digital. 44 years ago. M.

Me too! At 7.

How funny. All doing the same thing in different parts of the world.

This is what brings us all together. The love of timepieces. 🙏🏼. M.

Yes, really funny!

Very true. You just never know

Absolutely.

Hehe that was the perfect reaction, a smile. Nothing like being around the horological block a couple of times..

And that Tudor chrono reverse panda is killer! Easily the most interesting piece among all those watches that you mentioned

Yes that what I thought at the time.

I really rate the black Chrono M.

Nicely handled, I would do the same! Kudos to you!

However this is not brand specific. A little over a decade ago I attended a Watchtime event locally, and as I was looking at the then new to me RM pieces, I started chatting with a guy who was visiting from the Netherworlds abut the brand and horology in ...

Watch etiquette. Perfect.

As the years go by, I have become much more tolerant.

My life revolves wanting what I have not having what I want. You carried yourself with dignity and elegance. By the way, it was one hell of a great choice on your wrist.

Thank you Sir.

And yes you are right a lot changes with age and maturity. Not all for the best M.

Thank you

The watch looks great on your wrist

 By: Mr.Gatsby : January 9th, 2023-16:27
Thank you for sharing this story. The watch doesn’t define the person. It’s the other way round. I’ve now come to pay attention to this 79360N. Great piece. Best Gatsby

Thank you Amigo.

They are worth a look. I just love watches that look and feel great on my wrist. The Tudor range do that. The early Heritage BB’s tick those boxes for me. So much so I’ve just purchased another. . 73220b from 2015. Post to come soon. M.

Don’t get me wrong.

 By: Miles_151 : January 10th, 2023-12:45
I absolutely love Rolex but they just don’t excite me in the same way as Tudor do these days. M.

I was wearing a pair of sunglasses…

 By: myles721 : January 9th, 2023-17:24
An acquaintance made a back handed comment about them to which I responded “these are the coolest sunglasses in the world.” He just looked at me and I said “do you know why?” Just a blank expression …to which I said “Because I’m wearing them!” You don’t a...

LOL! Good one.

Love it.

I need to remember that one. Thank you. M.

Five years ago I was on holidays at a good hotel at Mallorca.

 By: aWtchslvr : January 9th, 2023-19:26
It caught my attention (in fact I made a comment to my wife about this) that nearly everyone was wearing a submariner. Great watch, no doubt, but if the guys of the plane think they have something exclusive they are plain wrong. Best.

Very true.

 By: Miles_151 : January 10th, 2023-12:47
Out of interest which hotel ?? M.

Zafiro Palace.

 By: aWtchslvr : January 10th, 2023-14:44

Yes I know it. Very nice.

 By: Miles_151 : January 10th, 2023-19:47
Next time you are in Mallorca let me know. Always pleased to meet fellow Watch nuts and chat over a glass or 3 of sangria. M.

An good story

 By: Drek : January 9th, 2023-21:04
and one you handed with dignity. It’s a shame that there was such a comment as imagine this was your only watch that you’d worked hard for and someone dissed it like that rather than appreciating what a great looking watch it is. Hope you had a great trip...

Absolutely you are right.

 By: Miles_151 : January 10th, 2023-12:49
Just imagine how hurtful a comment like that would be. I have the same love and respect for all my watches. I can honestly say that they all do the same for me. The only difference is the values and where I can wear them safely. M.
