these day dates have been " pushed " ( with helium ??? LOL ) by dealers who had serious avalaibility problems with all sports models ....
on the market now ( and in the last years ) you find far more daytonas and day dates ( made in a gigantic amount compared to sport models , maybe besides 5513 matt dial ).
so they begun to show them ( " today on my bloody wrist " ... LOL ) and many collectors have shown interest and some have bought them .
it's the same ( sad ) story that happened in the 90s in Rolex AD shops :
-- collector : " do you have a stainless steel 16520 ? "
-- AD : " no and I don't accept reservations any more ! "
-- collector : " so how much time I should have to wait ? "
-- AD : " for- five years Sir ! .. but what about a 16523 ( S/G ) ? here is a beautiful one ready for you .. "
-- collector : " mmmhhhhh ..... can I have a discount on this watch ? "
-- AD : " well .. for you and just for you I can do a 25 % discount on price list "
-- collector : " ah ! ok ! I'm yours ! "

......the so-called pecking order is only something that really manifests itself in prices. On this forum, the love for the Explorer is huge. It gets its love here...for sure. But yes, money creates a market-pecking-order...and in that sense I agree with ...

.....its definitely both. Genuinely, the concept that a watch is hard to find adds a different dimension to it. It makes it "rarefied air" .... and this is a selfish perspective, but it also means that I get to experience something that others do not........
I prefer it stays that way...

On this front, i suspect you are right....
......some lines of Rolex do appear to have been manipulated for higher prices.....and that is a shame....a real shame.

You're right about this.
Majority of my vintage Rolex collecting friends shun the explorer. The most will only entertain a 1655 or 16520 cream, if they do at it. I too find it funny that some would rather collect the datejust or daydate and don't give the explorer a second though...

It has been very successful for them!
