Rolex Deep Sea Challenge ( 2012 ).

Nov 16, 2018,14:44 PM

If you complain about the size of the Sea Dweller 50th Anniversary and Deep Sea Dweller, you didn't see this Deep Sea Challenge...

Born in 2012, as a prototype which never went in regular production, this watch is the Sea Dweller of the Superlatives.

The case is monstrous, with a diameter of 51, 4 mm, and a height of... 28, 5 mm!!! Yes, you read well, this is not a typo... 28, 5 mm.

To be compared wit the dimensions of the mother, the Deep Sea Special from the 60's ,which was 42, 7 mm big and... 36 mm big, and the almost normal Deep Sea from 2008, with its 44 mm / 17, 7 mm case.

Even Panerai watches look like they were made for altar boys, compared to this one.

There is a reason behind their exceptional thickness... The plexy of the Deep Sea Special was 18 mm thick, and the sapphire of the Deep Sea from 2008 and the Deep Sea Challenge are respectively 5, 5 mm and 14, 3 mm high... Which means that the Deep Sea Challenge case alone, without the sapphire is 14, 2 mm thick. And add the fact that its sapphire is not super but hyper domed, and you will get the idea.

The incredible Deep Sea Special:

As previously said, there are almost no chances you will fall on a Deep Sea Challenge, given the fact that it was a prototype.

So we will have to content ourselves with some official pictures from Rolex...

Here is THE Monster:

And like its ancestor, it went down the Mariana Trench... At 10, 900 meters under the surface of the Pacific Ocean... Successfully.

For the mere mortal, it is totally useless, but it feeds our dreams...

Best,

Nicolas

I would sooo buy the DeepSea Challenger. Too bad it wasn't offered or something close to it. Love the size.

I would also buy the challenge if it was available.

But for a different reason. The challenge was done to accomplish a certain purpose, to go deeper than anyone has. It succeeded. The regular sea dweller deep sea just seems big for the sake of being big. I bought an SD 4000 when they came out. A regular se...

Funny how perceptions change..

The SD4000 sat on my AD case when the 50th anniversary SD was introduced. He pretty much gave it away since he thought it was a dog.

Cool watch

I own several Hublot 4000m and like the size+depth rating. Rolex should really think about selling the Deep Sea.

I like the SD 43.

But my wrist is a little smaller so I can't quite pull it off. The SD4000 is goldilocks... just right.

I love the Deep Sea Special ! [nt]
