So I recently contacted a local AD looking for an Explorer I

and they kindly and promptly get back to me (and I'm not disparaging the AD here):

"...you will need is patience as I don't know when we will be getting another Explorer in..."

I went and found a BNIB Explorer from a Grey-market dealer for a price less than I would've paid from an AD (including the sales tax).  This watch is on its way to me now.

I politely let the AD know with my reply:

Thank you for the kind and prompt reply.  Unfortunately, since you don't know when you will receive another Explorer I sourced a brand new one from another dealer and it is on its way to me now.  I will definitely keep XXX Jewelers in mind when I am looking for another Rolex.

You probably hear this from other customers or potential customers but this "shortage" of Rolex sports models whether artificially created by Rolex to increase demand or not is really hurting authorized dealers from making sales.  I hope you can advise your Rolex rep that customers are looking elsewhere to source their watches or even buying other brand's watches as a result.

Thank you for your time and have a great weekend.

So I wonder if Rolex's ADs find this acceptable that they are losing sales because they have no product?

Question for the forum

Please name another industry where not having any product to sell to a customer with cash in hand or even knowing when you will have any product available to sell is a business model.

try Hermes

juding by how succesful they are, perhaps that should be the business model for all, no?!

For all? So if you go to a restaurant to eat but they don't have any food

but rather put you on a "list" and tell you that you'll be called in 2-3 years when they might have some food to cook and sell would work for you?

What I find most interesting...

Is how Rolex continues to kick its fan base in the groin and yet they keep asking "please sir, may I have another?". If you want to send a message, then simply take your business elsewhere. Lots of brands out there who would be more than happy to take you...

ADs losing sales?

They're the source of the grey dealers' inventory

Definitely some of them (open secret)

But in this example, this particular local AD lost my sale.

Industrial goods

I sell pneumatic components used in the automation process and I have to give that answer a lot

That’s EXACTLY my strategy!

Actually it’s more than that. My strategy is to keep telling EVERYBODY I know who asks me for advice which watch to buy (which happens relatively often) to vote with their wallet and buy elsewhere. I had a long discussion with the local AD about this last...

+1 for Hermes above...especially their famous B and K bags.

Also, the new G63 AMG wagon, long wait and no cars in the lot for “sale”.

true

that is why, even if money no object, my wife neither wants Hermes nor Rolex ever.

In any (all) other scenarios, this is called...

a confidence game. How fitting that the crown has made this into a thing of high esteem beauty value envy e t c e t c

Totally agree with the previous friends. This is not peculiar to the watch world, it concerns virtually any industry whose success is based on conveying a sense of luxury or exclusivity.

Would your sister have a better chance of buying a 30mm Birkin in a Hermes boutique, your brother a 911 limited edition at a Porsche dealer, or you a 5711 at a Patek AD? For good or bad (and I'm an only child), I take these as facts of life ;-)

Thankfully

 By: reintitan : April 27th, 2019-13:41
my sister isn't in the market for a Birkin, my brother a 911, or me a 5711 ;-) Definitely this is a tactic for the "luxury" goods market, but only works if the end consumer plays the game.

9 years I went to an AD and bought a 116610LN without problem

 By: Tyo : April 27th, 2019-18:18
6 years an explorer 1; 3 years a Milgauss, 2 years a Seadweller 116600. Then, 2 years ago I called my AD for a Daytona and it took 1 year, now I’m looking for two GMT, one for me the second for a friend. Impossible to find, I’m just tired. But one thing i...

You are looking at it from the consumer’s point of view. [nt]

As far as Rolex is concerned they can sell watches as fast as they can produce them. The dealers can sell watches as fast as they can obtain them. Neither has to finance any inventory of finished goods. That sounds like a pretty good business model to me....

The funny thing is that I bought only 2 Rolex watches from a Rolex AD. And every time, it was a lucky break. The Milgauss GV 116400 and the Air King 116900. All the others from collectors markets.

I forgot that Rolex AD or Boutiques sell watches... And it is not a problem for me. I just find other solutions, and if I don't find a way to get what I want, no problem. Same for vintage or watches from other brands... I love to let fate play. Best, Nico...

My friend, I have sourced all my new Rolex

 By: reintitan : April 28th, 2019-11:13
from non-ADs. This time I thought I would go ahead and use one, but it was not meant to be. I won't play Rolex's games.
