After a 50th anniversary version in steel in 2003, with a green bezel, then a redesigned case in 2012, here is the new generation Submariner, still water-resistant to 300 meters, with a slightly enlarged case, 41 mm in diameter. Inside, the brand's latest in-house movement, the 3230 caliber, unveiled by the brand this year, beats out the inside, and for the first time in the Submariner line, the 3235 caliber with a date function in addition to the time. As for the Triplock crown, equipped with a triple water-resistance system, it is literally screwed down like a submarine hatch. Finally, the crystal of these watches - surmounted by the Cyclope magnifying glass at 3 o'clock for better reading of the date on the Submariner Date - is made of virtually scratch-resistant sapphire. As a result of Rolex, these new Submariner watches are certified Chronomètre Superlatif, a standard redefined by the watchmaker in 2015 in terms of precision, water-resistance, automatic winding and autonomy.
[size=13] In these uncertain times, how do you see the evolution of the purchasing behavior of watch enthusiasts?
Eric COLLOMBIN. - The situation confirms our convictions. We perceive an acceleration of certain trends among consumers, particularly this search for more meaning and sustainable products. I'm thinking particularly of the younger generation. Products without batteries, without plastic, without programmed obsolescence. Quality, robust and reliable products that can be repaired easily, almost indefinitely, anywhere in the world. Models that retain as much of their value as possible, which can be passed on to the next generation. These products are more and more in demand. In a way, this is the promise that Rolex has always made to its clients and it seems to us that it is more relevant than ever. This vision of Hans Wilsdorf, the founder of Rolex, is not denied in this environment, on the contrary.
Why did he choose the Submariner as the key innovation for 2020?
Since the launch in 2015 of our 3235 movement, at the forefront of watchmaking technology, we have been looking forward to deploying in this legendary model a caliber that offers fundamental gains in precision, autonomy and reliability. The Submariner was launched in 1953. With it, Rolex perfected the waterproof watch it had invented 27 years earlier with the Oyster. Over the years, it has constantly evolved to improve its water-resistance, robustness and readability. It has been enriched many times by the technical and aesthetic innovations developed by the brand.
You offer several color combinations.
It was indeed the opportunity to imagine new dial colors, to revive the combination black dial/green bezel, and to propose a new combination blue bezel/black dial. But rest assured, the Submariner remains recognizable among a thousand. It is still the synthesis of Rolex know-how and iconic design, born directly from its function and the diving universe to which it is intimately linked... Even if it has long since conquered dry land, and is more the symbol of the action watch! Its historical aesthetics are accompanied by evolutions on the case and bracelet, whose proportions have been revisited. Not to mention the invisible attachment that we have now integrated into almost all of our new models. Finally, the Submariner Date's 18K white gold bracelets incorporate ceramic inserts inside the links to improve its fluidity and longevity.

The creative juices have long dried up at certain manufacturers. Rolex seem to think that moving up the case size gives them the all-clear to rehash old designs, like they did with the SRSD. A part of me dreads that this indeed is going to be the case (no...

Yep you’re right

Slightly slimmer lugs would be a nice look. I don't think they need to add a mm, but it's not a deal-breaker by any means... although unavailability will be!

Saw a wider shot somewhere..

Mentioned a few things but no upgraded PR.. Even Tudor has a 72 hr PR these days. GS had that some time ago.. Hope that's not the case.

My thoughts too 😬

Rolex has a brand equity that is delivering results. They do incremental improvements (both in and out), to achieve mechanical and usage perfection, and people buy them because of that, and for others because of the brand image. Their philosophy is not ab...

Yes it might come with a new size, movement and thinner lugs... But Rolex did exactly that with the SD4k 6 years ago(!!!) , which was subsequently discontinued after 2 years in production. I guess it’s a good product launch for those of us who are keen to...
