As for the exp 2 itself, for my tastes, it’s the one of the very few pieces in the rolex lineup that has yet to do a good job of evolving from the 5 digit references.
The sub has shed a mm or 2 off its controversial fat lugs. The explorer has returned to the historical 36 even if the 39 was a good iteration. The Airking, as polarizing as it is, at least broke out of the mold to be something markedly different. The same could be said for the sea dwellers with the SD43 and the JC. The Milgauss was a revival of sorts and didn’t really have that torch passing burden that the rest carried. The DJ always had the 36 even if they went briefly off the reservation with the DJ II, then went back a la sub to a more svelte 41. As for the the gmts and daytos, they have always changed at a very calibrated pace.
For a 50th anniversary piece, they could’ve just gone back to the 40mm case but maybe with a restrained maxi dial like how they made the indices just a bit bigger with the new explorer. Not too late though. It’s still 2021
