The Explorer

to me is the perfect Rolex if I could only have one. It has great size at 36mm, clear and legible dial with iconic 3-6-9 indexes, you can either dress it up or down.
But if your heart says it's the 1500, then you should follow it. Most importantly is that you have a try on the wrist before deciding to do the purchase, and the 1500 comes in a lot of dial variation. It is quite versatile too , not having the legibility like the explorer is a downside but it is still more legible than most other watches in the market.
As for the diameter, the 1500 measures 34mm and 1501 measures 35mm due to the difference in the bezel.
Hope it helps. And I wish you all the best in your search for your first Rolex!
Sam

Just a simple 1500 Oyster Date from 1960 that always put a smile on my face whenever I had it on my wrist. With a Glossy Gilt Swiss Only Dial, Dauphine Hands, Sharp Case and Bezel. Just a simple yet satisfying one Sam ...

Absolutely! And this post most helpful to a fellow struggling with which Rolex should be my first...

For the longest while I felt the Explorer (1) was the Rolex for me. But which one—the latest iteration, with lumed 3,6,9, edged the watch away from its original versatility, I felt. And then, which movement, size, etc. But recently—last year or so—I've be...

Thanks so much, Sam. Yes, the try-on is most important. The comparison of non-lumed to lumed 3,6,9 on the Explorer revealed to me the reduced versatility of the latest

reference. But I've not had a 1500 or 1501 on my wrist, so that's an obvious next step (made more complicated a the moment because of virus concerns). But all in good time. It's the journey, right? Best regards, Fred

Tough one Halgedahl.

I know here in the forum, the wind blows stronger towards the Explorer, especially the vintage ones. But for me, if you were looking for that "one" Rolex, I would go for a date-just. nothing is more Rolex than that. and the beauty of a date-just is that y...

I remember my first Rolex. Date just. I sat and stared at that watch for months. Never took it off. Pretty funny , now that I look back.

Very charming this one 😉 [nt]
